Bus Travel

A number of bus lines provide frequent service—about once every half hour during daylight and early evening hours—between Belize City and Cayo, with a stop in Belmopan. Among small bus companies authorized to operate on the George Price Highway are BBOC, D and E, Guerra’s Bus Service, Middleton’s, Shaw Bus, and Westline. James Line runs from Belize City to Belmopan, and then down the Hummingbird and Southern highways to Dangriga and Punta Gorda. Westbound buses depart from Belize City about every half hour beginning at around 5 am, with the last departures at 9 or 9:30 pm.

The cost between Belize City and San Ignacio is BZ$7 on a local, and BZ$9 on an express if you can find one. From Belize City regular buses are about BZ$5 to Belmopan and BZ$8 to Benque Viejo. Buses are typically old U.S. school buses and are not air-conditioned. Most buses from Belize City leave from what is still called the Novelo’s terminal on West Collet Canal Street, even though the Novelo’s bus line is defunct. Look for any bus with "Cayo" or "Benque" on the front. There is a bus station in the center Belmopan, while buses stop at a parking area next to the Cayo Welcome Center on Savannah Avenue in the center of San Ignacio.
