Sea Dreams Hotel

$$ | Hattie St., Caye Caulker, Belize Fodor's Choice

Charming rooms surround a venerable banyan tree and courtyard at this Caye Caulker classic, perfect for those seeking a flowered hideaway with access to the lagoon. After a day of exploring, you’ll be happy to return to the beautiful interiors and happier to enjoy the Belizean breakfasts in the morning, served under a roof of shady thatch. Above the dining area, a hammocked rooftop palapa is the place to be at sunup or sundown. All rooms are pleasant, but the Bougainvillea Bungalow is the star. Sea Dreams offers amenities you'd expect from upscale lodgings, like complimentary canoes, paddleboards, and bikes. A portion of profits go to the local high school, Ocean Academy, founded by Sea Dreams co-owner, Heidi Curry. A nice touch: educators receive a discount in summer months. Fishing tour operator Anglers Abroad is also based here, run by co-owner Haywood Curry.

Pros

  • Convenient location near the Split
  • Ideal for anglers
  • Warm owners and atmosphere

Cons

  • Beach is a short walk away
  • Fewer views than beachside hotels
  • Sometimes booked out

Barefoot Caye Caulker Hotel

$$ | Av. Hicaco at La Posa St., Caye Caulker, Belize

If you want to forgo island charm in favor of sleek, modern comfort, this striking hotel right in the heart of town might be for you. The minimalistic rooms are styled with a gray palette, Edison light bulbs, and hardwood headboards. The decor isn't the only thing that feels urban: the property itself is quite compact. But, a lovely pool and breezy rooftop round out the atmosphere, upping its tropical feel. Some rooms have ocean views, some more modest “island views.” Barefoot has an experienced team, a strong point of the hotel.

Pros

  • Modern designs
  • Offers privacy despite prime location
  • Belizean-owned

Cons

  • "Barefoot" feels like a misnomer
  • High rates for Caulker
  • May need earplugs at night

Caribbean Villas

$$ | Seagrape Dr., San Pedro Town, Belize

It may not be as modern as the island's newer resorts, but Caribbean Villas, with its gardens, pleasant beachfront, and fun two-story waterslide, is an affordable and low-key alternative to the glitzier developments. There's a happening pool and the Amber Beach Bar and Grill, which is great for a rum cocktail; mixed results for calamari. Choose from remodeled suites brightened with Guatemalan fabrics or the cheaper standard rooms. An artificial reef attracts fish to the end of the dock.

Pros

  • Reliable hotel with high return rate
  • Great pier
  • Waterslide and water trampoline are a hit

Cons

  • Some units could use updating
  • Not crazy cheap
  • Can attract night revelers

Island Magic Beach Resort

$$ | Av. Hicaco, Caye Caulker, Belize

With light seafoam or teal accents, these rooms are dependable; but the more seductive places to spend time are the swinging deck chairs, your private balcony, or the coral-pink loungers beside one of the island's nicest pools. The Magic Grill, where you can eat on swinging wooden loveseats, makes a choice spot for lunch. The liberal use of concrete gives Island Magic an unfortunately imposing presence. For Caye Caulker hotels, it's higher end; however, it's still not the fancy brand of resort one finds in San Pedro.

Pros

  • Family-friendly hotel with good service
  • Close to everything in town
  • Belizean-owned

Cons

  • Reasonable but not mega bargain rates
  • Uninspired decor
  • Concrete is unappealing

Mata Rocks by Barefoot Belize

$$ | Coconut Dr., Ambergris Caye, Belize

A bright white building, giving the impression of a ship at sea, houses stylish rooms at this friendly boutique hotel south of San Pedro. The fresh, squeaky-clean rooms have beautiful locally carved bed frames and white walls accented with handmade decorations. Outside, a small swimming pool is ringed by pleasant deck chairs, and the sea (with a sea wall) is steps away. With new owners in 2024, Mata Rocks now has the beach bar and the restaurant, which channels Caribbean culture via its dishes. Several good restaurants are a stroll away. Although not a large resort, Mata Rocks has personal service and amenities like complimentary bikes and kayaks. An added bonus: Mata Rocks has Belize's second pickleball court, which guests are invited to use.

Pros

  • An intimate, relaxed atmosphere
  • Pleasing, tasteful rooms
  • A solid value for Ambergris, especially in low season

Cons

  • A 30-minute walk from the center of town (but a short bike ride)
  • Swimming off the pier is not great
  • Fairly small units

Mayan Princess

$$ | 2 Barrier Reef Dr., Ambergris Caye, Belize

Sitting pretty and pink in the middle of town, this long-established seafront hotel has basic but pleasant efficiency apartments, lacking only a pool to make it a perfect mid-level choice. French doors open onto verandas with hammocks, where you can eat meals prepared in your well-equipped kitchenette. Some furniture is dated and nothing is fancy here, but you'll still enjoy the friendly service and beautiful views of a nicer resort. All units are oceanfront. Just a few steps away is one of the island's best dive shops, Amigos del Mar.

Pros

  • Walkable location
  • All apartments have lovely sea views and verandas
  • Moderately priced

Cons

  • No pool and no good swimming
  • Beach area has heavy boat and pedestrian traffic
  • Not fancy

Ramon's Village Resort

$$ | Coconut Dr., Ambergris Caye, Belize

One of the first and most famous resorts on the island, Ramon's really is a village, with its many buildings paneled in furry palmetto and canopied footpaths that you can get lost in. At the south edge of town, the popular resort attracts an active crowd who take their virgin daiquiris to the pool (no alcohol sold here, though guests may drink in their room or on the beach). You may find rates surprisingly spendy for the size and amenities, but you're paying for the setting. The grounds are lush, green, and flowery and the 500-foot beach is among the best in or near town. Snorkeling is decent off the long pier around its artificial reef. Across from Ramon's sits the small sister property Steve & Becky's, which has cute colonial-style cottages. The main restaurant, Pineapples On the Beach, serves so-so food and seems to import Las Vegas kitsch with its looming 16-foot Maya head.

Pros

  • Good in-town beach
  • Classic resort with jungle-like vegetation
  • The island atmosphere many are seeking

Cons

  • No sale of liquor means bring-your-own rum
  • Evidence of spotty management
  • Some rooms a bit outdated

Whether it's paradise or not depends on your expectations, but if you seek a cute, gently priced cabin built partly over the water, backed by coco palms, with snorkeling and adventure right out your door, this lodge could be for you. It's a pack-your-own-beach-towel type of joint, where the light eco-footprint and solar power mean no hot showers. Tobacco Caye Paradise is run by the Belize Adventure Group; eco-conscious excursions are the hotel's specialty. A full meal plan is an additional BZ$90 per adult per day. The Windward Lodge

$$ | Tobacco Caye, Belize

This cluster of turquoise cottages, each with a hammocked porch, is steps from the sea, and while accommodations are simple---just above backpacker level---the Caribbean is your playground. Here, there's a bit more room for stretching out than at other lodges on Tobacco Caye, as the property extends from the sea on the east to the island's back side. A bar is set away from the cabins. Rates do not include Marine Reserve fees or transportation.

Pros

  • Belize made affordable
  • A barefoot dream with hot showers
  • Friendly staff

Cons

  • Basic living
  • Trash can wash ashore
  • Too quiet for some tastes

Yocamatsu Caribbean Bed and Breakfast

$$ | Chapoose St., Caye Caulker, Belize

Inland from the sea, this mellow B&B is draped with golden trumpet vines and oleander, and offers personal service to a T. The hosts want to make sure you enjoy your trip to Belize, so they’ll even lend a hand with logistics and planning your vacation. Homemade breakfasts on the rooftop—with winning views of the sea and village—are a lovely way to crack open the day. Being a block or two away from the water, Yocamatsu won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but for those seeking a quiet, pleasant retreat it’s just the thing. The property abuts the football field, so you can watch soccer games from your cabana porch.

Pros

  • Lush, flowery setting and rooftop views of sea and village
  • Warm hosts
  • Plenty of privacy

Cons

  • Not seafront
  • Rooms don’t catch sea breezes
  • Shady area keeps some rooms darkish during the day
