Schlosshotel Chastè

$$$ | Tarasp, 7553, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Although many Swiss hoteliers can claim a second generation of family ownership, this hidden treasure boasts 500 years under the Pazeller family's care, who have preserved the bulging, sgraffitied stucco exterior and modernized much of what's behind the magnificently carved Arvenholz wood door. Now part of the Relais & Châteaux group, it started as a farm, then supplied provisions to builders of Tarasp Castle, which looms above. Each room varies a bit—a canopy bed here, an antique trunk there—and the attention to detail is stunning. The highly regarded on-site restaurant offers a wide range of sophisticated local and international dishes. The Grecian-inspired wellness area—with saunas and massage areas—provides ultimate relaxation.

Pros

  • Superb cuisine
  • Enchanting rooms
  • Untouched magical surroundings

Cons

  • Not a convenient location for those coming by train (though they provide transfers from the station)
  • Not very lively
  • No elevator

Suvretta House

$$$ | Via Chasellas 1, St. Moritz, 7500, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Outside St. Moritz, with stupendous views of Piz Corvatsch and Silvaplana Lake, the thoroughly charming Suvretta House encourages visitors to take advantage of the private ski-in, ski-out access to the Corviglia slopes just outside the front door, to skate on the ice rink in winter, to try the clay tennis courts and driving range in summer—or just to lounge by the indoor pool or outdoor hot tub. The renovated lobby and guest rooms are airy, light, and bright, with modern fabrics, contemporary furnishings, and views to the lake and mountains. Jacket and tie (and no sneakers) are requested in the main dining room, or opt for a more casual Swiss meal in the informal Suvretta Stube; there are also two off-site mountain restaurants serving up traditional fare. This 19th-century grand hotel welcomes you with its inspiring Roseg Valley views, warm interiors decorated in vibrant colors, and a free minibar that's restocked daily. The family-friendly property includes modern, spacious rooms with separate bedrooms to accommodate couples with one or two children. Hotel Schweizerhof

$$$ | Via dal Bagn 54, St. Moritz, 7500, Switzerland

This big-city hotel in the center of town was built in 1896 and still offers grand public areas with carved wood and moldings alongside refined, if a tad faded, guest rooms with truly wondrous views. All rooms are done up in lively red and blues; southern-facing rooms have balconies with unimpeded views of the Alpine lakeside panorama. The lovely breakfast room has a ceiling featuring a glittering birch forest painted by Gottardo Segantini, son of the Italian artist, and the informal Acla restaurant serves up solid meals such as Swiss beef and Wiener schnitzel; its outdoor terrace is open in summer and winter (in good weather). The basement bars, featuring live music, are resort staples on weekends. The rooftop wellness center offers saunas, steam baths, massages, and superb views over the lake. Hotel Waldhaus Sils

$$$ | Via da Fex 3, Sils, 7514, Switzerland
With old-fashioned style and inviting public spaces, this charming grande dame in the neighboring village of Sils ticks all the boxes, from elegant restaurants to a surprisingly modern and architecturally stunning spa. Guest rooms are in three styles: classic, modern, and nostalgic, with restored 1908 furnishings; many have views of Lake Silvaplana. A lovely open lounge area with mountain views makes an appealing space for a coffee or cocktail. Although it doesn't quite fit with the rest of the hotel's decor, the uber-contemporary subterranean spa area is a beaut—with two heated pools, saunas, and steam rooms—and guaranteed to relax.

Guest rooms vary greatly in style and size, ranging from compact and rather sparse with no balcony to elaborately decorated with stunning views; all feature brightly colored fabrics.
