7132 Hotel

$$$$ | Vals, 7132, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Though a bit tricky to get to, this exclusive spa hotel inspires relaxation from the moment you arrive with its airy rooms with deep soaking tubs and steam showers, Michelin-starred food, and fabulous thermal baths hewn from local stone. Guest rooms in light colors and natural wood feature ultracomfy beds, along with inviting sitting areas, complimentary minibars, and long balconies with soothing Alpine views; huge bathrooms have double sinks, double rain showers, and separate tubs. Don’t miss aperitifs in the Blue Bar before choosing between the more experimental 7132 Silver and the more traditional 7132 Red for dinner. Of course, the hotel’s piece de resistance is the thermal baths; stay on a Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday to enjoy a peaceful nighttime soak reserved exclusively for hotel guests. Note that the hotel is closed on Monday and Tuesday nights (though the thermal baths are open), and weekend stays have a two-night minimum. The 7132 complex also includes the House of Architects, which features simpler and smaller (and less expensive) rooms designed by famed architects including Peter Zumthor, Tadao Ando, and Kengo Kuma.

Pros

  • Delicious eating options
  • Spacious, super-comfortable rooms
  • Worth staying just to use the thermal baths at night (or day)

Cons

  • Jaw-droppingly expensive
  • Out of the way
  • Not well-suited to families (though kids are welcome)

What was once a 19th-century wooden chalet has expanded to become a full-fledged "Alpine lifestyle" destination, and its position on the farthest edge of town, at the base of the slopes, is its biggest draw. Badrutt's Palace Hotel

$$$$ | Via Serlas 27, St. Moritz, 7500, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

From the moment your Rolls-Royce whisks you from the train station to the hotel, you'll see why Badrutt’s Palace is Switzerland at its most glitzy and glamorous, complete with magnificent public spaces, an exclusive spa, numerous top chef–driven restaurants, and a high-society pedigree. Guest rooms, in both contemporary and traditional styles depending upon your preference, have luxe fabrics and ultracomfy beds. Badrutt's offers 10 restaurants, including the formal Le Restaurant and Jordnær at Badrutt's Palace (from Copenhagen Michelin-starred chef Eric Vildgaard), as well as more modern fare at an outpost of celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa, open only in winter. The hotel also houses two bars and one club, with a menu designed by renowned British chef Jason Atherton. The spa, with mountain views from its indoor and outdoor pools, is a delight. Although the celeb count is lower than in its heyday, in high season you'll find the Palace crammed with beautiful people and wealthy wannabes: in fact, people-watching in the lobby is a local pastime.

Giardino Mountain

$$$$ | Via Maistra 3, Champfèr, 7512, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

This Alpine-chic design hotel—within seven 18th-century buildings that formerly housed a boarding school—brings a younger, fresher vibe to often-traditional St. Moritz. Though a bit removed from St. Moritz proper in the village of Champfèr, there are shuttles to Corvigia and Corvatsch for easy access to the slopes. Guest rooms have casual mountain decor, with plenty of wood and Italian fabrics; some have freestanding tubs inside the room itself for a soak after skiing or hiking. The spacious wellness area includes a nice-size indoor pool along with steam baths, saunas, and treatments; coaches, who can lead guests in achieving goals such as strengthening their back or improving their balance, are available upon request. In-house restaurants are also unique, from the international tapas of Hide & Seek to a branch of the two-Michelin-star Ecco, open only during the winter season.

Pros

  • Stylish, contemporary feel
  • Friendly, personalized service
  • Kids' club for children age three and older

Cons

  • Limited restaurant options near the hotel
  • Some rooms on the small side

Grace La Margna St Moritz

$$$$ | Via Serlas 5, St. Moritz, 7500, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Housed inside a historical building originally designed in 1903 by Nicolaus Hartmann—who also designed the train station across the street—along with a striking new building right beside it, the Grace offers a touch of clean, contemporary luxury, with grand public spaces and views of the mountains and lake from the guest rooms. Within St. Moritz’s only five-star hotel open 365 days a year, all guest rooms, decorated in soothing greys and browns, feature king-size beds with Frette linens; expansive stone-and-marble bathrooms have double sinks and walk-in rain showers. Guests can choose from rooms either in the recently built Grace Wing, with floor-to-ceiling windows and air conditioning, or the renovated Art Deco La Margna Wing, which has a similar look but also includes bathtubs (though no AC); splurge on the Grace or La Margna terrace suites for outdoor spaces with magnificent views. The main Mediterranean restaurant, The View, stays open all year for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, while during the winter season, The Stack serves up brasserie-style cuisine and The Max Moritz offers Swiss fine dining; N/5 – The Bar is worth visiting any time of year for inventive and seasonally changing cocktails in a convivial atmosphere. The spa features an indoor pool and whirlpool as well as two saunas and a steam bath, plus (since this is St. Moritz, after all) a fine selection of ultra-pampering treatments including massages, body wraps, and facials. There’s also a cute, well-stocked kids’ club for tots ages 3 and up.

Pros

  • Wonderful views throughout the hotel
  • Tasty drinks and small plates at N/5 – The Bar

Cons

Grand Hotel Kronenhof

$$$$ | Via Maistra 1, Pontresina, 7504, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

A grand Versailles set amid mountain peaks, the Kronenhof is the pinnacle for rest, relaxation, and pampering, with gorgeous designs inside and out, a keen attention to detail, and a sprawling lawn perfect for admiring the views of Roseg Valley. The hotel was completed in 1890, and the exterior has changed little since then. The lobby and dining rooms, with elaborate moldings and heavy chandeliers, are dazzling, especially the rococo gold-and-gilt Grand restaurant. Upstairs, the guest rooms feature two distinctive styles: some are grandiose, with heavy furniture; others are more modern, with hardwood floors and carved Grisons ceiling panels. Whereas the Grand serves elegant international cuisine, the gorgeously wood-burnished Kronenstübli offers upscale regional fare. Completing this masterpiece is a spa with relaxation, lap, whirl-, and jet pools; steam rooms and saunas; and grand views guaranteed to whisk your cares away.

Pros

  • Beautiful grounds and location
  • Excellent dining options
  • Top-of-the-line children's facility

Cons

  • Expensive for this area
  • Hotel checkout could be more streamlined

With three interconnected hotels, seven restaurants, four bars, its own private wellness area, and a direct connection to the Tamina Therme thermal spa complex—not to mention a huge park and stunning mountain views—this superlative resort offers a little something for everyone. The Grand Hotel Quellenhof features spacious, luxe rooms with walnut parquet floors, touches of modern art, and balconies overlooking the lovely green space in front of the property. Spacious bathrooms use natural stone; showers sparkle with gold tiles. The Grand Hotel Hof Ragaz has a more traditional style, while the Spa Suites feature their own private spa areas with whirlpool bath, sauna, and steam shower. Restaurants include Michelin-star options serving elegant Swiss cuisine, plus Asian and Mediterranean eateries. You can sample the waters at the gorgeous and historic Helena Bath indoor pool, dating from the 19th century—exclusively for hotel guests' use—or take a dip in the outdoor Garden Pool. There’s also a small spa with whirlpool, steam room, and sauna; 8- and 9-hole golf courses; minigolf; and substantial 24-hour gym. Hotel Chesa Grischuna

$$ | Bahnhofstr. 12, Klosters Platz, 7250, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Located directly in the town center and renovated from a farmhouse in 1938, the family-run Chesa Grischuna has one of the most charming settings—and, arguably, the friendliest owners—in Switzerland. Every guest room, including those in the nearby chalet annex, embodies mountain coziness with their country prints, fluffy duvets, carved wood, and antiques. Because Klosters has long been a gathering place of international society, this place has plenty of public salons to accommodate guests; whether you bowl in the vaulted cellar, play cards, or dance to the piano music at happy hour, you'll be surrounded by the Klosters cognoscenti. The restaurant is legendary for its chic gemütlichkeit (coziness), with carved-wood trim, romantic lighting, and a delicious mix of salads, soups, and seasonal full-fledged meals—and, fittingly, truly helpful service.

Hotel Schatzalp

$$ | Schatzalp, Davos, 7270, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

About 950 feet above town on a quiet, car-free slope, this magnificent, if a tad faded, hotel will transport you back to the grand spa days of Davos. Once used as a sanatorium, the hotel's public spaces are now decorated in elegant belle epoque style; the guest rooms are a lot more simple, with basic furnishings and no TVs. Described in Mann's The Magic Mountain, the vast hotel has grounds to match, with fun features like a long hillside slide in summer and a 2½-km (1½-mile) sled run in winter. All south-facing guest rooms have balconies overlooking the looming mountain range. Spend summer afternoons visiting the hotel's botanical garden, or relax in the three sauna and steam rooms. The hotel is accessible only by its own funicular, the Schatzalp-Bahn, a four-minute ride from Davos-Platz near the Hotel Europe.

Pros

  • Peaceful, awe-inspiring location
  • Historic charm
  • Boundless activities for all ages

Kulm Hotel St. Moritz

$$$$ | Via Veglia 18, St. Moritz, 7500, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

This luxury hotel can claim its share of St. Moritz superlatives: it was the first hotel here (1856) and the first house to have electricity in all of Switzerland (1878), but modern comfort has come a long way, as seen in top-quality facilities like a 9-hole golf course and putting green, ice-skating and curling in the colder months, and a large variety of in-house restaurants (some open only in winter). Rooms vary between a more traditional and a more modern style; though they differ in size and decor, all feature wood accents and luxe bathrooms. Half-board is usually included in the rates, and guests have a wide range of choices including the Grand Restaurant, a romantic vaulted space, with a menu of international cuisine, Peruvian plates at Amaru, and menus from star chef Mauro Colagreco at the Kulm Country Club. The Kulm Spa features a saltwater grotto, indoor-outdoor pool, and top-notch fitness center (complete with inspired views).

Nira Alpina

$$ | Via dal Corvatsch 76, St. Moritz, 7513, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Across from the Corvatsch cable car that transports guests up 3½ km (2 miles) to the highest peak in the surrounding area, this boutique design hotel, quite different from most other "traditional" St. Moritz–area accommodations, is an ideal choice for skiing, sledding, and hiking on Silvaplana Lake—along with just hanging out in its cool environs. All of the modern, rustic-chic rooms have huge terraces with views across the valley to the Piz Nair and, in summer, to kiters and windsurfers. The rooftop bar, with contemporary wood, suede, and cowhide-covered furnishings and a panoramic terrace with mountain views, is the “it” bar in the area. The open fireplace and furnishings are trendy but comforting. Stars Restaurant serves up international cuisine for dinner, or get your pizza fix at Pizzeria Stalla Veglia during the winter. The designer spa has a small pool and huge whirlpool, sauna, and steam and aroma baths.

Pros

Schlosshotel Chastè

$$$ | Tarasp, 7553, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Although many Swiss hoteliers can claim a second generation of family ownership, this hidden treasure boasts 500 years under the Pazeller family's care, who have preserved the bulging, sgraffitied stucco exterior and modernized much of what's behind the magnificently carved Arvenholz wood door. Now part of the Relais & Châteaux group, it started as a farm, then supplied provisions to builders of Tarasp Castle, which looms above. Each room varies a bit—a canopy bed here, an antique trunk there—and the attention to detail is stunning. The highly regarded on-site restaurant offers a wide range of sophisticated local and international dishes. The Grecian-inspired wellness area—with saunas and massage areas—provides ultimate relaxation.

Pros

  • Superb cuisine

Suvretta House

$$$ | Via Chasellas 1, St. Moritz, 7500, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

Outside St. Moritz, with stupendous views of Piz Corvatsch and Silvaplana Lake, the thoroughly charming Suvretta House encourages visitors to take advantage of the private ski-in, ski-out access to the Corviglia slopes just outside the front door, to skate on the ice rink in winter, to try the clay tennis courts and driving range in summer—or just to lounge by the indoor pool or outdoor hot tub. The renovated lobby and guest rooms are airy, light, and bright, with modern fabrics, contemporary furnishings, and views to the lake and mountains. Jacket and tie (and no sneakers) are requested in the main dining room, or opt for a more casual Swiss meal in the informal Suvretta Stube; there are also two off-site mountain restaurants serving up traditional fare. Hotel Belvédère Scuol

$$ | Stradun 330, Scuol, 7550, Switzerland

If you're in Scuol primarily to visit the Bohn Engiadina Scuol, you can't do better than to stay at this centrally located family-owned hotel—there's a covered pathway that leads directly to the spa, so you can discreetly head over in your robe and slippers any time you like—and room prices include unlimited spa access. Rather generic though good-size guest rooms are heavy on the wood with bursts of color (lime green and red) on the chairs and curtains; some include cozy balconies with lovely views of the town and mountains. Scuol's Old Town is just a five-minute walk downhill, though you'll have a steep climb on your return. The lounge is a relaxing, airy spot for a glass of wine, and you can choose from the two restaurants, including one with Thai cuisine, if you decide not to venture from the hotel at all.

Pros

  • Unbeatable access to the spa
  • Central location, on main shopping street and close to Old Town
  • Open year-round

Cons

  • Restaurant food could be better
  • Room information (menus, room details, etc.) only in German
  • Rooms lack a certain charm

Hotel Bünda Davos

$ | Museumstr. 4, Davos, 7260, Switzerland

In a typical chalet-style building, this hotel is perfectly located right by the children's and beginners' slope, and the cross-country ski track; in addition, the Parsenn funicular is only a few minutes' walk away. Guest rooms in the main building are small, and some have showers instead of a tub. Larger, more expensive rooms are in an annex, connected to the hotel by an underground passage, where you will also find the spa including saunas, a steam room, and a relaxation area, along with a fitness room. There's also a good-size garden with a children's play area and large sun terrace.

Pros

  • Direct access to beginner and kids' skiing
  • Great for families
  • Lovely spa area

Cons

  • Slightly outside the center
  • Lacks character
  • Very small gym

Hotel Chesa Languard

$$ | Via Veglia 14, St. Moritz, 7500, Switzerland

Set in the town center, this pleasant (if worn) little hotel shares the Kulm's lovely mountain views, but not its prices. Details like sgraffiti, carved ceilings, and fine darkened pine in some rooms preserve the best from its earlier days. The big corner guest rooms deserve their higher price; back rooms are small, but all have tile baths. Front rooms have mountain and lake views, and some also have balconies. In the small sitting area, check out the collection of skiing trophies won by the owner's father, who used to run St. Moritz's ski school.

Pros

  • Affordable (for St. Moritz) with five-star views
  • Central location
  • Charming wood interiors

Cons

  • No spa or restaurant (though guests can use Crystal Hotel's spa)
  • Could use a freshening up
  • Steep climb up from the train station

Hotel Corvatsch

$$ | Via Tegiatscha 1, St. Moritz-Bad, 7500, Switzerland

This basic but charming hotel in the middle of St. Moritz-Bad will make you feel right at home, as the friendly service and a drink by the crackling fire in the cozy "living room" are often all one needs at the end of a long day of hiking or skiing. The large and airy restaurant is highly recommended and has a great deal of locally sourced, seasonal dishes to choose from, including lots of venison, veal, fondue, and pastas. This hotel offers cheaper deals for longer-staying guests, as well as for summer visitors.

Pros

  • Welcoming and helpful service
  • Highly regarded food
  • Easy walk to lake or town

Cons

  • Those who need a "room with a view" should stay elsewhere
  • Beds are not large
  • No spa

$$ | Rablüzza 152, Scuol, 7550, Switzerland

This typical 16th-century Engadine house is in the heart of Scuol's Old Town and has inviting rooms decorated with Swiss pine, carved ceilings, and exposed beams. A second house, with five rooms, has a more updated Alpine-chic style with wooden floors and bold, modern furniture. The restaurant, open daily until 5 pm, has a welcoming, country feel, with light wood, blue linens, and cushions. Room prices include a large buffet breakfast and homemade cakes in the afternoon.

Pros
