AMERON Davos Swiss Mountain Resort

$ | Scalettastr. 22, Davos, 7270, Switzerland

All rooms have balconies at this contemporary (if somewhat generic) hotel that caters to all tastes with an Italian restaurant and a pleasant spa with a pool and a gym. Wood-panel rooms have cozy faux-fur blankets on the beds and bursts of red or green on the headboards; the "comfort room" level and up includes free minibars and pillow menus. The in-house Italian restaurant Bacio Della Mamma specializes in Roman-style pizza along with antipasti, pastas, and various meat dishes; there’s also a fondue restaurant, Cervolino, in winter. In the basement, you’ll find the 850-square-meter (9,150-square-foot) 4 Elements Spa Centre, which includes a pool, saunas, steam bath, experience showers, and a relaxation area, plus treatments by appointment; there’s also a well-equipped 24-hour gym.

Pros

  • Nice spa area
  • Friendly staff
  • Convenient location near the Promenade

Cons

  • Lacks a unique style
  • Restaurant food far from gourmet

Heidihof Hotel

$ | Bovelweg 16, Maienfeld, 7304, Switzerland

At the kitsch-happy farmhouse that's been expanded to a small inn, you can have a snack and take in the view or spend the night; rooms are basic but tidy and functional. The restaurant serves up local specialties, and there's a lovely terrace where you can enjoy a glass of wine. As you'd expect from a hotel in Heidiland, kids are very welcome; keep them occupied in the attached Peter & Heidi Playground.

Pros

  • Short walk to Heidi's Village and hiking trails
  • Fun setting for Heidi fans
  • Peaceful location

Cons

  • Very simple rooms
  • Extra charge for breakfast
  • A bit pricey overall for what you get

Hotel Bünda Davos

$ | Museumstr. 4, Davos, 7260, Switzerland

In a typical chalet-style building, this hotel is perfectly located right by the children's and beginners' slope, and the cross-country ski track; in addition, the Parsenn funicular is only a few minutes' walk away. Guest rooms in the main building are small, and some have showers instead of a tub. Larger, more expensive rooms are in an annex, connected to the hotel by an underground passage, where you will also find the spa including saunas, a steam room, and a relaxation area, along with a fitness room. There's also a good-size garden with a children's play area and large sun terrace.

Pros

  • Direct access to beginner and kids' skiing
  • Great for families
  • Lovely spa area

Cons

  • Slightly outside the center
  • Lacks character
  • Very small gym

Sonnenhalde

$ | Sonnenbergstr. 5, Arosa, 7050, Switzerland

The sensor-touch heavy pine door that welcomes you to this garni (without a restaurant) chalet-hotel is your first sign of the happy marriage between charm and modern comfort here, followed by the welcoming family and small staff offering energetic and reliable service in a cozy space. The sizable, well-lighted guest rooms have wall-to-wall wood and rustic decor; all have en suite showers rather than bathtubs. Some rooms easily accommodate extra beds (for an additional fee). Tired, aching muscles can be replenished in the small but fortifying sauna, steam room, and relaxation area. An evening meal and weekly fondue night is offered during the winter season.

Pros

  • Proximity to ski lifts and village
  • Cheaper rates during the low and summer seasons
  • Friendly atmosphere

Cons

  • More gourmet dining requires venturing out
  • Surcharge if guests don't stay at least three nights
  • Extra fee to use the sauna

Swiss Heidi Hotel

$ | Werkhofstr. 1, Maienfeld, 7304, Switzerland

Though there's not much local charm (and nothing particularly "Swiss" or "Heidi" about the hotel), the double rooms are clean but simple and the suites are modern and much larger, all for a reasonable price for the area. An easy-to-get-to location off the motorway and near the train station makes this a practical base for discovering the region or conducting business. You can get a basic meal at the on-site bistro, or grab a drink at the lounge, open only in the winter.

Pros

  • Ample, free parking
  • Buffet breakfast included
  • Rooms are clean and comfortable

Cons

  • 20-minute walk to town
  • No air-conditioning
  • No particular charm
