They are usually built of wood, glass, and stone, with steep slate roofs that blend in with the surrounding mountains. Most hotel establishments are family operations passed down from generation to generation.

THE BEST HOTEL IN THE PYRENEES

Hotel Torre del Remei

$$$$ | Camí del Remei 3, Bolvir de Cerdanya, 17539, Spain
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Built in 1910 for the daughter of a wealthy Barcelona banker, this luxurious boutique property is secluded among the fir and sequoia trees of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. Along with design elements combining a Gothic castle with those of a French château, look for modernist Art Nouveau details resembling those of famous Catalonian architect Antonio Gaudí; the estate's architect was one of his disciples. Rooms and suites are exceptionally comfortable and smartly designed, and the sprawling grounds are a tranquil respite in any season.

Pros

  • Mountain or garden views in every room
  • Highly attentive and knowledgeable staff
  • Deluxe bathtubs and shower rooms

Cons

  • Difficult to access without car
  • Limited nearby evening activity options
  • Scarce availability in high season

Casa Irene exudes old-fashioned coziness with wood-beamed ceilings and plush armchairs, plus modern amenities. There's a restaurant offering French-inflected Pyrenean cuisine and a spa (sauna, indoor swimming pool, treatments) that is a welcome respite after a day's mountain activities.

Hotel Aneto

$$$$ | Ctra. de Francia 4, Benasque, 22440, Spain

The only four-star hotel in the area, the Aneto is handy to central Benasque and just a few minutes by car to mountain trails and skiing. It's also the most favorable for families, who appreciate the gardens and indoor pool. The design integrates the look of a classic mountain chalet with modern interior features, which may not be to everyone's taste. Its light and airy café-bar looks out over the mountains, and there are two restaurants, one serving traditional dishes, the other with fusion cuisine.

Pros

  • Clean and spacious
  • Best option in town if you're bringing children
  • Close to local attractions and amenities

Cons

  • Modern design lacks charm
  • Slow Wi-Fi in the rooms
  • Pricey for the level of facilities

Hotel Maristany

$$$$ | Av. Maristany 20, Camprodón, 17867, Spain

A stately old chalet on Camprodon's grandest promenade, this lovely family-owned hotel offers a chance to live like the 19th- and 20th-century Barcelona aristocracy who spent their summers here. Guest rooms have a grandmotherly charm with blue-gray walls and heavy curtains, and those on the top floor have vaulted wood ceilings. The restaurant occupies the beautifully converted former coach house.  Adults only.

Pros

  • Tranquil location outside the center
  • Excellent restaurant
  • Private parking

Cons

  • Rooms and baths are somewhat cramped
  • So-so soundproofing
  • Antiquated furnishings

For rustic surroundings—light on luxury but long on comfort—only a two-minute walk from the ski lift, this modern-traditional construction of glass, wood, and stone is a good choice. The spa is small but offers a range of rejuvenating treatments you no doubt deserve after shredding the slopes.

Parador de Vielha

$$$$ | Ctra. del Túnel s/n, Vielha, 25530, Spain

The shining star at this modern granite parador is a semicircular salon with huge windows and spectacular views over the Maladeta peaks of the Vall d'Aran. Many of the rooms also have a decent mountain view and a terrace, compensating for the somewhat functional design. The light-flooded restaurant serves Catalan and Pyrenean cuisine, such as olha aranesa and civet de jabalí (wild boar stew). There's also a spa, with heated indoor and outdoor pools and a variety of treatments.

Pros

  • Terrific observation post
  • Comfortable and relaxed
  • On-site spa and swimming pool

Cons

  • Overmodern and somewhat lacking in character
  • Beside a busy road
  • 2 km (1 mile) from Vielha old town
