Madrid’s oldest neighborhood, Palacio is the home of the imposing Palacio Real. This is where Muhammad I established the city's first military post in the 9th century, essentially founding the city. The quarter, bounded by the Plaza Mayor to the east, is a maze of cobblestone streets lined with homey restaurants and old-school cafés and shops.
