Hotel Spadari al Duomo

$$ | Via Spadari 11, Milan, 20123, Italy

That this chic city-center inn is owned by an architect's family comes through in details like the custom-designed furniture and paintings by young Milanese artists in the stylish guest rooms. For all its artistic accents, this is still a comfortable, homey base in Milan, with an inviting frescoed breakfast room and many rooms with private terraces. Personal touches—such as wine and snacks in the lobby, eggs cooked to order at breakfast, and free nonalcoholic drinks in the minibars—abound.

Pros

  • Good breakfast
  • Central location
  • Attentive staff

Cons

  • Some rooms on the small side
  • Street noise can be a problem
  • No restaurant

Hotel Toro

$$ | Via Roma 16, Ravello, 84010, Italy

Two minutes from the Duomo, this good-value, relaxing, little place with a garden, antiques, and a history that includes stays by some illustrious artistic guests (e.g., the composer Edvard Grieg and the artist M.C. Escher) has been family-run for three generations. Grieg wrote in the guest book that he was "molto contento," and Escher's celebrated prints of spiraling staircases were inspired by those he saw in Ravello and Atrani.

Pros

  • A small piece of Ravello's artistic history
  • Very central
  • Friendly, helpful staff

Cons

  • Long flight of steps to climb

Hotel Villa Cimbrone

$$$$ | Via Santa Chiara 26, Ravello, 84010, Italy

Suspended over the azure sea and set amid legendary rose-filled gardens, this Gothic-style castle was once home to Lord Grimthorpe and a hideaway for Greta Garbo; since the 1990s, it's been an exclusive if pricey visitors haven, with guest rooms ranging from palatial to cozy. A newer wing has a bevy of options with sea and pool views. Furniture, artworks, and vintage art books that belonged to the lord's daughter still grace the enchanting sitting room and 19th-century music room. Gourmet restaurant Il Flauto di Pan is well regarded.

Hotel VIU Milan

$$ | Via Aristotile Fioravanti 6, Milan, 20154, Italy
A short walk from trendy Corso Como and the historic Cimitero Monumentale, this sleek business-focused hotel features vertical gardens outside and contemporary Italian-designed furnishings within—but its true pièce de résistance is an inviting rooftop pool with panoramic views. Large guest rooms done up in neutral colors have floor-to-ceiling windows; some feature private terraces. The critically acclaimed restaurant, Morelli, is overseen by chef Giancarlo Morelli. The Bulk Mixology Food Bar (just off of the expansive lobby, with a huge fireplace at its center) offers more casual fare and craft cocktails. There's also a small spa and fitness center, so you can squeeze some wellness into your stay.

Il Gatto Bianco

$$ | Via Vittorio Emanuele 32, Capri, 80073, Italy

The spot where Jacqueline Kennedy famously sought refuge from the paparazzi is still a wonderful place to experience a quintessentially Caprese atmosphere, particularly in the public spaces, featuring a blue-on-white bar/breakfast area, 1950s majolica-lined stairs, and antique-y accents. With greater crowds packing Capri, the hotel does suffer a bit from its location—just around the corner from the Piazzetta and right in the thick of crowds, cafés, and discos. That noted, it has grown a little ritzier over the years, and facilities now include a spa open to nonresidents.

Pros

Il Palazzetto

$$$ | Vicolo del Bottino, 8, Rome, 00187, Italy

Formerly the retreat of a rich noble family, this 15th-century house is now one of Rome's most intimate and luxurious hotels, with gorgeous terraces and a rooftop bar affording views of the never-ending theater of the Spanish Steps. Even the Hassler, Il Palazzetto's iconic sister hotel on the other side of Piazza Trinità dei Monti, can't make this claim. The four tranquil guest rooms are outfitted in soothing taupes and creams (three look out over the Steps); none of them have room service, but guests enjoy full use of the facilities at the Hassler. Without the 24-hour attention of the Hassler, and with their sense of privacy and independence, Il Palazzetto's accommodations feel more like small, luxury apartments than hotel rooms—something that's seen as a major perk by guests, who tend to book up the rooms months in advance.

Pros

  • Location and view
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Guests have full access to the Hassler's services

Cons

  • Often books up far in advance, particularly in high season
  • Bedrooms do not access communal terraces

Il Palazzo Experimental

$$ | Dorsoduro 1411, Venice, 30123, Italy

Of-the-moment Parisian designer Dorothée Meilichzon composed the striped pastel color palette at this hip boutique hotel—the first Experimental Group property in Italy—hidden inside a Renaissance palazzo facing Giudecca Canal. Spacious rooms in soothing colors feature terrazzo floors and minibars filled with local products and ready-made Experimental Cocktail Club cocktails; some have balconies with fabulous canal views, while others overlook the back garden or, sometimes, adjacent buildings. The in-house Ristorante Adriatica serves coastally inspired cuisine, and you’d be remiss to stay here and not sample an inventive drink at the attached Experimental Cocktail Club. Some of Venice’s top art stops—the Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and Punta della Dogana—are just a stroll away.

Pros

Il Palazzotto

$$ | Via Sette Dolori, 39, Matera, 75100, Italy

Interestingly renovated residence hewn out of the tufa rock, with a relaxed lounge/reception backdropped by a large Guerricchio canvas and atmospheric, sculptured breakfast room and cozy niche; a choice of high-dome ceiling, multishape rooms and suites—a mix modern and rustic furniture offset by sleek lighting. The layouts of the rooms vary with the idiosyncrasies of each stone dwelling: some are spacious while others have odd design choices like a minibar and coffee/tea facilities next to a shower and toilet.

Pros

  • Larger rooms in the sassi caves are more spacious and unique

  • Radino wine tasting and bistro
