Hotel de Russie

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Occupying a 19th-century building that once hosted royalty, Picasso and Cocteau, the Hotel de Russie is now the first choice in Rome for government bigwigs and Hollywood high rollers seeking ultimate luxury in a secluded retreat. Famed hotelier Rocco Forte updated the bright rooms with modern furnishings and large marble bathrooms. The spectacular multiterraced \"secret garden\" and its sharp Le Jardin de Russie restaurant make this a truly one-of-a-kind oasis just steps from Piazza del Popolo.

Hotel Eden – Dorchester Collection

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

At what was once a favorite haunt of Ingrid Bergman, Ginger Rogers, and Fellini, dashing elegance, exquisite decor, and stunning vistas of Rome combine with true Italian hospitality. The hotel is a bit out of the centro storico (historic center) for serious sightseers, but it's also a quick walk from the top of the Spanish Steps and feels like an oasis of calm thanks to its location atop the Villa Borghese. Rooms have elegant design features and thoughtful amenities: soaring ceilings, enormous Bang and Olufsen HD televisions, a complimentary tablet for in-room use, fine linens, and gleaming marble bathrooms. Topping it all off is one of Rome's most fabled fine dining restaurants: La Terrazza, where gourmet tasting menus come with truly romantic vistas. The more casual Ristorante Il Giardino and Il Giardino Bar (also on the rooftop), plus La Libreria lobby lounge round out the offerings.

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Set in a rationalist 1940s building that once housed the offices of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro, this trendy lifestyle hotel by Ian Schrager and Marriott features a design that leans minimalist, but has some attention-grabbing details, like green velvet curtains in the lobby. Rooms and suites have walnut wood-paneled walls, neutral color schemes, and Le Labo amenities in the stone bathrooms. The restaurant, Anima, serves traditional Italian cuisine with a contemporary approach. There are three bars, including the moody Punch Room, the marble Jade Bar, and a trendy rooftop bar.

THE BEST HOTEL IN ITALY

Mandranova

$ | SS115, Km 217, Agrigento, 92020, Italy
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Set amid a vast olive grove, this tranquil rural retreat feels as if it's in the middle of nowhere yet is just a 20-minute drive from the UNESCO-listed temples of Agrigento. Rooms combine contemporary minimalism with original details (exposed sandstone walls, tiled floors, wooden beams) while the reception rooms in the main house—warmed by open fires in winter—have the feel of a refined aristocratic home, with old photographs, original stone floors, original paintings, intriguing sculptures, and a collection of rural curios. There is also a gorgeous pool, and the owner, Silvia, hosts cooking lessons and olive oil tastings. In autumn, you can take part in the olive harvest. The dining offerings include breakfast, homemade cakes, seasonal fruits, and simple lunches of home-baked bread, salads, and local cheeses. The restaurant serves a four-course dinner (whose menu changes every day) in the evenings. In good weather, you can eat outside on the romantically lit cobbled terrace.

Pros

  • Peaceful and rural
  • Romantic swimming pool
  • Cooking classes and olive oil tastings with owner

Cons

  • No room service
  • Might be too off the beaten track for some
  • Car is essential

Capri Palace Jumeirah

$$$$ | Via Capodimonte 14, Anacapri, 80071, Italy Fodor's Choice
Capri Palace Hotel & Spa, Capri
Guido Fua

This Anacapri icon with unique design, spa, exquisite food, and luxurious retreat atmosphere throughout has amassed a noted art collection and even launched a fashion and home line and hosted A-list cultural events. The on-site Capri Medical Spa offers both one-off treatments and multiday programs targeting wellness, diet, posture, leg health, and more. Capri Tiberio Palace

$$$$ | Via Croce 11–15, Capri, 80073, Italy Fodor's Choice
Capri Tiberio Palace, Capri Town and Environs
Preferred Hotels & Resorts

Offering guests comfort, style, luxury, and sigh-inducing views since the 19th century, this hotel is a short walk from the piazzetta—near the action, but not quite in the thick of it. All 23 suites have private terraces, but the clincher is the 1950s Hollywood–inspired Bellevue Suite, with its 360-degree-view rooftop terrace and plunge pool. Three salt-filled golden bowls in the lobby extend a traditional island welcome, and elsewhere Regency-style decor combines local color with international chic. The Terrazza Tiberio restaurant is a local-meets-international gourmet experience, and the white grand piano in the Jacky Bar evokes times past. There's a renowned spa with sensory showers and adjoining gym, or you can simply relax, enjoying the view, drink in hand, immersed in the indoor-outdoor swimming pool.

Pros

  • Friendly staff
  • Pure luxury
  • Fabulous design

Cons

  • No port-to-door guest shuttle

Pope Alexander VII of the famed Sienese Chigi family gave this palace to his niece as a wedding present in 1600, and, through the centuries, it has been a private home as well as a grand hotel—one that exudes elegance from its stately pillared entrance to its crisp-linen sheets. Some guest rooms take in panoramic views, whereas others have 18th-century frescoes and massive chandeliers. The excellent staff is reason enough to consider a stay here.

Pros

Grand Hotel Vesuvio

$$$ | Via Partenope 45, Naples, 80121, Italy Fodor's Choice
Grand Hotel Vesuvio, Naples
Courtesy Grand Hotel Vesuvio

You'd never guess from the blandly modern exterior that this is the oldest of the city's great seafront hotels—the place where Enrico Caruso died, where Oscar Wilde dallied with lover Lord Alfred Douglas, and where Bill Clinton charmed the waitresses—but, fortunately, the spacious, soothing interior compensates for what's lacking on the outside. Guest rooms, the best of which overlook the bay, are luxurious and traditional, with antique accents, vibrantly colored walls, and gleaming bathrooms. On-site amenities include the famous Caruso restaurant, the rooftop Sky Lounge, a small gym, and a spa with myriad (though pricey) pampering services.

Pros

  • Luxurious atmosphere
  • Historical setting and traditionally furnished rooms
  • Directly opposite Borgo Marinaro

The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Venice

$$$$ | Campo Santa Maria del Giglio 2467, Venice, 30124, Italy Fodor's Choice
The Gritti Palace, San Marco
Courtesy of The Gritti Palace

With handblown chandeliers, sumptuous textiles, and sweeping canal views, this grande dame (whose history dates from 1525, when it was built as the residence of the prominent Gritti family) represents aristocratic Venetian living at its best. Although renovations have been done since the palace became a hotel in the 19th century, many original architectural details remain, including wooden ceilings, patterned flooring, and—depending on the room category—flourishes like 18th-century Murano wall lamps, silk damask Rubelli fabrics, and traditional Venetian stucco. If you enjoy executive chef Alberto Fol's locally influenced menus at one of the Grand Canal–view restaurants, you can enjoy a Chef's Table experience with the master himself. The Gritti Epicurean School hosts cooking classes and wine tastings. The treatments at the Gritti Spa -- Sisley Paris incorporate the Italian-made line's aromatic scents, each named after a different region of the country.

Pros

  • Truly historical property
  • Grand Canal location
  • Classic Venetian experience

Hassler Roma

$$$$ | Piazza Trinità dei Monti, 6, Rome, 00187, Italy Fodor's Choice
The Hassler, Spagna
Courtesy of Hassler Roma

When it comes to million-dollar views, the best place to stay in the whole city is the Hassler, so it’s no surprise many of the rich and famous (Tom Cruise, Jennifer Lopez, and the Beckhams among them) are willing to pay top dollar for a room at this exclusive hotel atop the Spanish Steps. First opened in the late 1800s and run by the sixth generation of Swiss hoteliers—making it Rome's only luxury property to remain in private hands—the Hassler hits you with old-world elegance, exclusive clubhouse vibes, and refined service the moment you enter. The quiet hallways have an air of discrete opulence, but the lavish rooms are decorated with art and antiques, plus some whimsical touches. One penthouse claims the largest terrace in town (and a €10,000-per-night price tag), while the other goes one better with two terraces, not to mention butler service (€18,000 per night). More standard rooms at the back will spare you and your wallet the VIP prices, but they don't offer the coveted vistas across the Roman skyline. The Michelin-starred rooftop restaurant, Imàgo, is world-famous for its view and gets top marks for a menu that reinterprets seasonal Italian cuisine. There's also a spa, gymnasium, and salon on-site.

Pros

  • Prime location and panoramic views
  • Exceptional service
  • Sauna access included with each reservation

Cons

  • VIP rates (10% VAT not included)
  • Some rooms are rather small
  • Rooms are updated on a rolling basis, leaving some feeling dated

Hotel al Ponte Mocenigo

$ | Santa Croce 1985, 30135, Italy Fodor's Choice
Hotel al Ponte Mocenigo, Santa Croce
Courtesy Hotel al Ponte Mocenigo

At this hotel—once home to the Santa Croce branch of the Mocenigo family, which counts a few doges in its lineage—a columned courtyard welcomes you, and guest room decor nods to the building's history, with canopied beds, striped damask fabrics, lustrous terrazzo flooring, and gilt-accented furnishings. Indeed, the whole interior has been meticulously renovated to incorporate exposed-beam ceilings, Murano chandeliers, fireplaces transformed into writing nooks, and other distinct architectural features. A sauna is nice for unwinding after a day of sightseeing. The hotel is on a side canal convenient to any number of sights, cafés, restaurants, and shops. It's deservedly very popular, so book well in advance.

Pros

  • Fantastic value
  • Friendly and helpful staff
  • Enchanting courtyard (the perfect spot for an aperitivo)

Hotel d'Inghilterra

$$$$ | Via Bocca di Leone, 14, Rome, 00187, Italy Fodor's Choice
Hotel d'Inghilterra, Piazza Di Spagna
Andrea Getuli

Situated in a stately 16th-century building and founded in 1845, this storied hotel served as a guesthouse for aristocratic travelers visiting the noble Torlonia family (who still lives across the cobblestone street) and has since been the home away from home for various monarchs, movie stars like Elizabeth Taylor, and several great writers—Lord Byron, John Keats, Mark Twain, and Ernest Hemingway among them. A top-to-bottom renovation kept the British influence as an homage to the hotel's Grand Tour–era heyday, while upgrading the rooms and suites as well as the public spaces, including the sidewalk-facing restaurant and intimate English-style bar.

Pros

  • Distinct character and opulence

Oltre il Giardino

Oltre il Giardino-Casaifrari, San Polo
Courtesy Oltre il Giardino-Casaifrari

Behind a brick wall, just over the bridge from the Frari church, this palazzo named "Beyond the Garden" is hard to find but well worth the effort: a sheltered location, large canal-side garden, and individually decorated guest rooms make it feel like a country house. Although furnished with antiques and other period touches, the prevalent white-and-pastel color scheme lightens the tone, making the hotel seem less formal than other Venetian lodgings. The owner's service is as conscientious as the renovation. As for pedigree, in the 1920s, Alma Mahler, a 20th-century femme fatale, lived here while she was married to author Franz Werfel.

Pros

  • Peaceful, gracious, and convenient setting

Villa d'Este

Europe's rich and famous have long favored this hotel, one of Italy's grandest, where rooms are done in Empire style; a broad veranda sweeps out to the lakefront; a swimming pool extends above the water; a restaurant offers top-notch views and cuisine; there are four private villas; and pavilions, miniature forts, and other follies ensure whimsical garden walks. Built on the site of a former nunnery as Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio's summer residence, this lakeside retreat has had a checkered history since its completion in 1568, swinging between extremes of grandeur and dereliction. Its life as a private summer residence ended in 1873, when it was turned into a fashionable luxury hotel.

Villa Las Tronas Hotel & Spa

Villa Las Tronas, Alghero

A stunning mansion dating from the 1880s has been transformed into this elegant secluded hotel that blends gold tapestries, crystal chandeliers, marble floors, canopy-draped beds, vaulted ceilings, and other Belle Époque treasures with modern amenities such as a luxury spa with a gym and an illuminated pool. It's set on a rocky promontory—above the sea but still near the center—affording great views from the spacious balconies of every room. Guests often congregate in the main lounge or the adjoining billiards room for after-dinner drinks. In summer, the outdoor saltwater pool, beach bar, and sun terrace are great places to relax. Service is sophisticated and impeccable, especially in the restaurant, where black-tie waiters suavely deliver silver-domed seafood and vegetarian platters (not meat), and the sound of live piano music and, occasionally, an opera singer set a suitably upscale tone.

Pros

  • Promontory setting with regal sea views
  • Incredible service
  • Luxury spa

Aethos Milan

$$ | Piazza XXIV Maggio 8, Milan, 20123, Italy Fodor's Choice

The decor in this eclectic, extremely hip hotel at the foot of the lively Corso di Porta Ticinese and by the Navigli canals features sports memorabilia from golf, horseback riding, boxing, and others. The lobby area is anything but traditional: check in while sitting in a barber's chair, as you plot to carve out time on the inviting dark leather couches or perhaps enjoy a cocktail at The Doping Bar, or dinner in the Mediterranean-style restaurant, Zaïa. Despite all the design, the ambience is casual and welcoming. Some suites even have their own terraces where you can chill in private.

$$ | Strada Regionale 45, 16, Breuil-Cervinia, 11020, Italy Fodor's Choice

Aethos breaks the traditional Alpine lodging mold with ultramodern furnishings, a rock-climbing wall inside and an ice-climbing wall outside (winter only), an indoor-outdoor spa, and even a Japanese steak house and cocktail bar, near the sleepy Alpine village of Champoluc. All-suite rooms, with private terraces, maximize the space with double-decker spaces featuring beds and bathrooms upstairs and sofa beds with another bathroom downstairs. You can sign up for lessons on the indoor climbing wall that dominates one side of the lobby—there’s also a twice-weekly “kids’ hour” for ages 5 to 10—while true adventurers can hone their ice-climbing skills on the 39-foot ice wall attached to the hotel. The inviting spa extends from indoors to out: The inside features an 82-foot swimming pool with floor-to-ceiling windows, a steam room, sauna, whirlpool, cold plunge, and well-equipped gym, while the outdoors has another pool, more saunas, and wooden hot tubs with mountain views. The Summit restaurant prepares an eclectic mix of Alpine-inspired Italian cuisine, while 1568 Japanese Steakhouse features Asian-inflected raw fish and grilled meats. For a pre- or postdinner tipple, the Doping Champoluc cocktail bar, an outpost of one in Milan, has a large selection of Japanese whisky and specializes in Japanese-style cocktails along with finger foods.

Pros

  • Well-designed exteriors and interiors
  • Hip, young vibe compared to other alpine hotels
  • Unusual activities on offer, such as an indoor climbing, ice climbing, and boxing lessons

Cons

  • In a rather remote area
  • Service can seem harried
  • Split-level rooms not to everyone’s taste

Albergo Al Sole

$$ | Via Collegio 33, Asolo, 31011, Italy Fodor's Choice

This elegant pink-washed hotel in a 16th-century building overlooks the main square and has wide views over picturesque Asolo or its leafy hinterland. This was once the actress Eleonora Duse's preferred haunt, and you can choose to stay in the room where she regularly entertained the poet and libertine Gabriele D'Annunzio. All the rooms are large and furnished with turn-of-the-last-century antiques. Decoratively tiled, the bathrooms have massage showers, which might come in handy for legs that have climbed up the hill for a view (or spent time in the fitness room). The terrace is a great place for a sunset drink or dinner in summer.

Pros

  • Central location with beautiful views
  • Free bike hire
  • Shuttle service to the surrounding area

Cons

  • Huge rate increase in the high season
  • Standard rooms have less interesting views than more expensive ones
  • Expensive drinks and hidden extras
