Want to buy something really unusual for a shoe lover? Check out the multithong trohadia, worn with pantaloons by Skyrian men as part of their traditional costume. Just as unique, elaborate Skyrian pottery and furniture are famous around the country. The pottery is both useful and decorative, and the distinctive wooden furniture is easily recognizable by its traditionally carved style. The best places to shop are on the Agora. Skyrian furniture can be shipped anywhere. Don't try to shop between 2 and 6 pm, as all stores close for siesta.
The showroom and store of celebrated local ceramic artist Stamatis Ftoulis is on the beach road from the town towards Molos, and here you'll find a range of hand-painted pots, plates, vases, tiles, and many other delightful little trinkets. Each features the island's traditional and distinctive floral pattern, mastered over some five decades by Stamatis.
The workshop of Lefteris Avgoklouris and Emmanouela Toliou, carpenters with flair, is open to visitors. They will show off their chairs and other pieces and tell you about other master carpenters and craftspeople on the island who make original Skyrian furniture, famous around Greece for its intricate technique. They ship their distinctive pieces abroad.
