Getting Here and Around

Little Symi is well served by boats, either on one-day excursion trips with tour operators (see Tours) from Mandraki Harbor in Rhodes Town or via the Dodecanese Seaways www.12ne.gr/en ferry services that link the islands. The trip takes less than an hour. All boats and ferries arrive in Yialos, Symi's main harbor, while catamarans also make a stop in Panormitis or Pedi, though both are easy to reach from town once there.

From the bus stop on the south side of Yialos Harbor, the yellow city buses make the hourly trip up to Chorio and on to Pedi Bay for €1.70 one-way. The green buses go from the same stop and link Yialos and Panormitis for €4 one-way; there are just three return services a day. Hiring a car is pointless here; there is only one main road after all. Once on Symi, you'll learn that the easiest way to get around is by foot. If you are staying in Nimborio or other outlying areas that are reached via unpaved roads, make arrangements in advance for your hotel to pick you up, as most taxis, except for a few of the younger drivers, refuse to risk their cars, or will only take you part of the way.
