The city of Paris is planning to build two walls around that most iconic part of its skyline—the Eiffel Tower.
But before any cries of “Non!” and “Mon Dieu!” go up the project is actually something of an improvement. The walls will be 8-feet-tall (less than one percent of the tower’s total height) and be made of clear glass, replacing metal fences installed by the city around the base of the tower as a security measure for the Euro 2016 soccer championship. The deputy mayor in charge of tourism, Jean-François Martins, called the metal gates “disgraceful.”
The glass walls are just one part of a planned $318 million update to the tower that’ll include better elevators, stronger security, and an improved visitor center.
