In tranquil Boscastle, some of the stone-and-slate cottages at the foot of the steep valley date from the 1300s. A good place to relax and walk, the town is centered on a little harbor and set snug within towering cliffs. Nearby, 2 miles up the Valency valley, is St. Juliot's, the "Endelstow" referred to in Thomas Hardy's A Pair of Blue Eyes—the young author was involved with the restoration of this church while he was working as an architect.
