Battlesteads Hotel

$$ | Hexham Rd., Hexham, NE48 3LS, England

Located 10 miles north of Hexham and "beyond the wall," this delightful old inn combines three virtues: good food, cozy rooms, and eco-friendly credentials. Bedrooms are simple but modern, with colorful decor and good-size bathrooms, and four rooms are fully wheelchair accessible. The restaurant uses produce grown in the hotel's own gardens, and is especially crowded on Sunday.

Bedford Hotel

$$ | 1 Plymouth Rd., Tavistock, PL19 8BB, England

This grand, castellated hotel in the center of town harks back to its Victorian heyday, with lounge areas furnished with comfy armchairs, warmed by open fires, and dotted with old artifacts and local photos. Choose one of the four rooms with four-poster beds if you hanker for the traditional style, as other rooms have a more modern decor. Despite its dated feel, the hotel revels in its old-world identity, and its nostalgic tone chimes well with Tavistock's timbre. The Bull

$ | Hall St., Long Melford, CO10 9JG, England

This half-timber Elizabethan building reveals its long history with stone-flagged floors, bowed and twisted oak beams, and heavy antique furniture. Pets are welcome in some rooms.

The Castle Hotel Windsor

$ | 18 High St., Windsor, SL4 ILJ, England

You're treated to an exceptional view of Windsor Castle's Changing the Guard ceremony from this former coaching inn, parts of which date from the 16th century. In the older section of the Georgian-style house, guest rooms have gently tilting floors and some suites have standing bathtubs in the room; in the modern part, it's smooth elegance, with tasteful neutral tones enlivened by a judicious sprinkling of red or yellow. The cozy lounges are perfect for afternoon tea.

Castle Inn

$$ | Main Rd., Corfe Castle, BH20 5RN, England

A thatched roof and flagstone bar are some of the 16th-century features of this small inn, where the individually furnished bedrooms make the most of the original beams, exposed brickwork, and stone fireplaces. There's an extensive garden to sit in, and the sea is a 10-minute walk away. Locally sourced gastropub dishes (such as beer-battered fish-and-chips or a fillet of stone bass with butter beans) are available daily. Local craft beers are a specialty. The place is extremely dog-friendly, so anyone with an aversion to Fido should stay away.

Pros

The Colonnade Hotel

$ | 2 Warrington Crescent, London, W9 1ER, England

Near a canal filled with colorful narrow boats in the Little Venice neighborhood, this lovely town house offers individually styled rooms, some with rich brocades, velvets, and antiques, others with balconies. The 1920s elevator (believed to be one of the oldest still working in the United Kingdom) and the Wedgwood fireplace in the lobby add to the historic style, as does the "Sigmund Freud Suite" (Freud visited regularly in 1938). It's also the birthplace of Alan Turing, one of the fathers of computer science and the man who deciphered the German Enigma code in World War II.

Pros

  • Beautifully decorated
  • Unique and little-known part of London by Regent's Canal
  • Cool history

Cons

  • You have to go through shoddier parts of town to get here

Cornerways

$$ | 1 Bethesda Pl., St. Ives, TR26 1PA, England

Everything in St. Ives seems squeezed into the tiniest of spaces, and this cottage lodging in the quiet Downalong quarter is no exception. Though small, the light, tastefully converted rooms are pleasingly simple in design, with modern decor and good bathrooms, and the more expensive ones have sea views. Most rooms are named after characters in Daphne du Maurier's novels (she regularly stayed here in the 1940s). Breakfast is not offered, but there are plenty of options in the immediate neighborhood, and rooms are equipped with fridges, fresh milk, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. A minimum two-night stay usually applies.

Pros

  • Central location
  • Modern decor
  • Literary connections

Cons

  • Bank-transfer or cash payments only (except for online deposit)
  • Narrow stairways to climb

The Devonshire Fell

$$ | Burnsall Village, Burnsall, BD23 6BT, England

This more casual sister property of the Devonshire Arms down the road (guests have access to the larger property's spa and hiking trails) boasts outstanding views over a particularly lovely part of the Yorkshire Dales. The design of the guest rooms is fresh and modern, but there is a sense of corners being cut; the complimentary breakfast is fruit salad (no roll or croissant) and orange juice from a carton. The service is very friendly, but somewhat haphazard (you may have to carry your own bags up the stairs) because the small staff oversees both the hotel and the two restaurants. The Dalzell, the more formal option, serves Modern British dishes like pan-fried halibut  with seaweed potatoes, while a more informal Bistro offers elevated pub grub such as fish and chips or grilled steaks.

Pros

  • Lovely views
  • Excellent location
  • Friendly staff

Cons

  • Food can be uneven
  • Casual service

The Egerton House Hotel

$$$$ | 17–19 Egerton Terr., London, SW3 2BX, England

This welcoming boutique hotel is an oasis of understated country-house chic in glitzy Knightsbridge, with guest rooms that don't stint on design touches like four-poster beds, swagged curtains, and patterned wallpaper and textiles. Prints and posters by impressionist artists adorn the walls, and some rooms have verdant views over the beautiful gardens in back. The lovely staff—surely among the most helpful and friendly in London—keep everything running like clockwork. The two drawing rooms are good places to write letters or relax with a drink from the honor bar. There is no restaurant but a limited menu is available through room service. The hotel also has a partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum, which means guests can score tickets even to sold-out exhibitions.

Pros

  • Personalized, attentive service
  • Luxurious but comfortable design
  • Welcoming, homey atmosphere

Ember Locke

$$ | 202--220 Cromwell Rd., SW5 OSW, England

This former Victorian hotel near Earl's Court has been converted into an apartment/hotel residence aimed at extended-stay travelers, although there are a handful of rooms without kitchenettes. The decor is inspired by the legendary, retro-chic Biba boutique formerly just down the road, with deep vermilions, emeralds, and mustards, Art Deco touches, and numerous potted palms. The individually designed boudoir-style rooms are comfortable (though unlikely to appeal to fans of high-tech touches—USB ports and even power outlets are in short supply) and kitchens have Smeg appliances. There's a spacious garden with a terrace, a co-working space, a free laundry room, a café that serves breakfast, a Middle Eastern restaurant, and a bar.

Pros

  • Cozy but glamorous retro-theme design
  • Decent on-site dining
  • Convenient location

Cons

  • Dim lighting in rooms and corridors
  • Towel service and housekeeping not hotel-level

Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire

$$$$ | Chalky La., Hook, RG27 8TD, England

Although deep in the British countryside on a 500-acre estate, this country-house hotel, part of the luxury chain, is only a half hour from Heathrow; the manor house's original wing (the others are more contemporary) dates back to 1728, although luxuries like marble bathrooms and Frette linens are thoroughly modern. Relax in the heated indoor pool and spacious spa offering Dr. Barbara Sturm treatments and hypnotherapy, or enjoy country pursuits like horseback riding (there's an equestrian center), fishing in the stocked pond, falconry, and clay-pigeon shooting. For the more adventurous, there's zip-lining. There are also family-friendly elements, such as a special kids' pool with a waterslide and a supervised kids' club on weekends. Dining options range from a Vietnamese-influenced spa café and a pizzeria to a restaurant serving seasonal Modern British food.

Pros

  • Peaceful location
  • Great spa

It's a great place for families—most rooms are spacious enough for several people, and there are excellent facilities for the kids. Modernizations have successfully melded vintage character with contemporary pizzazz. The relaxed dining room, which opens onto a terrace, is open to nonguests.

Pros

The lively restaurant and bar downstairs tend to be busy in the afternoons and evenings, and while it's a good place for a drink, you'll be better off dining elsewhere.

Harington's Hotel

$ | 8–10 Queen St., Bath, BA1 1HE, England

It's rare to find a compact hotel in the cobblestone heart of Bath, and this informal three-story lodging converted from a group of Georgian town houses fits the bill nicely. Bedrooms, though bright, are not spacious, there are no views from the windows, and the parking facilities can be tricky to find. However, the cleanliness, polite and friendly service, outdoor hot tub, and central location outweigh these minuses. There's also an EV charging point, and the hotel is pet friendly. The hotel also rents a number of serviced apartments in Bath for short stays.

Hotel du Vin

$ | Magdalen St., Exeter, EX2 4HY, England

This former hospital has been reimagined as a modish hotel with a zippy, happening vibe and add-ons that include a heated indoor-outdoor pool and spa treatments. Any residual institutional feel has been dispelled by the contemporary decor of the guest rooms, the walled garden, and a pavilion-like bistro-restaurant that offers a superb range of Mediterranean-style dishes. The location isn't auspicious (it's on the edge of the old town by an intersection), but it's only a few minutes' walk from the center. Hotel parking should be booked ahead.

Pros
