Hotel Dagmar

$$ | Torvet 1, 6760, Denmark Fodor's Choice

Originally built in 1581 by a city alderman, the Dagmar became an inn by 1800. Although ordinances prohibit such modern conveniences as an elevator, some contemporary touches are apparent. For a hotel of this vintage, standard rooms are quite comfortable (though not lavish); some have canopy beds. The restaurant is fantastic, with seasonal set (two to six courses) and à la carte menus.

Pros

  • Well-regarded restaurant
  • Historical hotel
  • Located next to tourist office and cathedral

Cons

  • Parking fee DKr 100/day
  • Some rooms are small
  • Pricey for the town

Ruths Hotel

$$$$ | Hans Ruths Vej 1, 9990, Denmark Fodor's Choice

One of the most glitzy and historical places to stay in Skagen was built by Emma and Hans Christian Ruth before World War I. Since then it's been completely rebuilt with modern facilities, and its main restaurant, Okê, is one of the most popular restaurants in town. There's also a brasserie that serves French food prepared with local ingredients. Rooms are typically lavish in an understated, Scandinavian way, and all have balconies or terraces and Swedish-made DUX beds; some have hot tubs. The wellness center provides regular spa and beauty treatments.

Pros

  • Lively restaurants and bar
  • Close to beach
  • Impeccable service

Cons

  • Room service not available 24 hours
  • Early reservations essential for restaurant and hotel in peak season
  • Pricier than other hotels in town

Best Western Hotel Scheelsminde

$$ | Scheelsmindevej 35, Aalborg, 9100, Denmark

Set in a historic mansion that dates back to 1808, this modest lodging may not add anything to the annals of great hotels, but it does offer clean, functional rooms with all the amenities one expects: Wi-fi, flat-screen TVs, and coffee facilities. Some rooms have been updated, have larger bathrooms, and are markedly nicer than others, so be sure to request one when booking. The hotel restaurant décor feels a bit retro, but the food is good, especially the plentiful buffet breakfast. There's also a bright indoor swimming pool.

Pros

  • Free continental breakfast
  • Helpful, friendly staff

Cons

  • Away from city center

Comwell Hotel Hvide Hus

$$ | Vesterbro 2, Aalborg, 9000, Denmark

At 16 stories, this property—a five-minute walk to the train station and 10 minutes from the city center—is one of the city's few high-rises, meaning plenty of light and balconies overlooking Kildepark. Rooms are fully functional, but lack some of the modern conveniences, like a minibar, air conditioning, and safe. The newly modernized top-floor Restaurant Kilden, with wonderful views of the city, offers an ample breakfast, and it's worth checking out the daily dinner specials. Weekend rates are very reasonable.

Pros

  • Close to attractions
  • City and park views

Cons

  • Street traffic makes rooms on lower floors noisy
  • No air conditioning

Many of the colorful guest rooms overlook all the action. This hotel is beyond kid friendly: pictograms help children identify which room they are in, and rooms include the requisite Legos for kids of all ages to play with.
