2 Best Hotels in St. Kitts, St. Kitts and Nevis

Background Illustration for Hotels

St. Kitts has an appealing variety of places to stay—beautifully restored plantation inns (where a meal plan including afternoon tea in addition to breakfast and dinner is the norm), full-service, affordable hotels, simple beachfront cottages, and all-inclusive resorts. There are also several guesthouses and self-serve condos. Increasing development has been touted (or threatened) for years. The ritzy 125-unit Park Hyatt plans to debut its first Caribbean property on Banana Bay, in partnership with the grand Christophe Harbour development that will sprawl across the Southeast Peninsula, offering spectacular villas, beach clubs, celebrity restaurants, a megayacht marina, a Tom Fazio–designed golf course, and other boutique hotels. Several upscale villa compounds are being developed, such as the culture-oriented, eco-centric Kittitian Hills (architect Bill Bensley designed some of Thailand's most remarkable resorts), which will include an "edible" golf course (greens will intersect with farmland), spa, cosmopolitan retail village, farm-to-table restaurants, and a variety of sustainable lodgings in vernacular style, most with fabulous views. The first phase of spectacular hillside cottages opened in 2014; the resort is scheduled for completion in late 2016. Another deluxe condo complex, the sparkling 185-unit Ocean's Edge on the Atlantic side of Frigate Bay, opened its first two beachfront blocks in late 2012.

Belle Mont Farm at Kittitian Hill

$$$ | St. Kitts and Nevis Fodor's Choice

Atop a hill with majestic valley and Caribbean views, this grouping of luxurious "standard" guesthouses, farmhouses, and villas comprise the Kittitian Hill development, built with sustainably sourced materials (from Canadian cedar-shake roofs to andasite stone quarried on-site) and featuring a 400-acre organic farm that provides ingredients for offerings in the restaurants and the spa, and Irie Fields—a 9-hole "edible" golf course that's one of only three such developments in the world. Lodgings blend smart technology (enormous flat-screens that lower to stream Netflix) with colonial grandeur (claw-foot tubs in stunning alfresco bathrooms). The green approach costs buckets of green, but everything from the billeting to bill of fare justifies the final bill. All-inclusive plans are available but aren't standard.

St. Kitts Marriott Resort

$$$ | 858 Frigate Bay Rd., St. Kitts and Nevis

From families to conventioneers and golfers to gamblers, this big, bustling beachfront resort has something for everyone, scoring points for its sizable rooms (albeit many without direct beach access or true sea views), soothing Emerald Mist Spa, sexy Bohemia beach bar, fine golf course, and decent casino with the trendy Sky Lounge. Although over-scaled for tiny St. Kitts, it's the perfect entry-level Caribbean resort—right down to the giant mermaid statue and faux pirate galleon—and its dining outlets have started incorporating local ingredients and recipes that lend a bit more authentic, West Indian flair. Although maintenance is kept up and staff are diligent, service is inconsistent and often impersonal, and the breakfast rush hour sees long waits.

Pros

  • Enormous main pool and great range of activities
  • Good bars and plentiful duty-free shopping
  • Many packages offer good value, especially off-season

Cons

  • Occasional time-share pitches
  • Surprise extra resort charges
  • Mostly mediocre food
