Mackey's Takeout

$$

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are simple Bahamian and American fare similar to what's on offer at other spots on the island. And while the delicious Bahamian food menu is worth a stop, it's the ice cream that draws the crowd to this whimsical little takeout restaurant in the middle of the island. There's even a coffee bar for that caffeine fix, served up iced or piping hot. There are a few chairs and tables on the outdoor porch, but most folks carry their food with them.

Mangoes

$$

An open-air deck makes Mangoes a great place for waterside dining. Enjoy a traditional Bahamian breakfast; feast on cracked conch and zesty salads at lunch; and at dinner, try house specialties like smudder grouper, fried and seasoned with tomato, thyme, and pepper sauce; grilled rack of lamb; or the catch of the day grilled, fried, or blackened. If it's wahoo, order it grilled with lots of extra lime. The restaurant is housed in a complex that contains a boutique selling resort wear and fine jewelry from around the world, and a 29-slip marina—which means you can sail in from the offshore cays, tie up in front, enjoy a meal, and do some shopping. They also offer free Wi-Fi so you can check your email while grabbing a bite to eat.

This island treasure—and possibly the area's most-recommended dining spot—is praised up and down by locals and visitors alike. Quintessentially Bahamian, it's where you can sit all day on a stool at the colorful roadside hexagonal gazebo or at a table in the garden patio amid chickens and a goat, enjoying beers and nibbling on excellent conch salad prepared right in front of you. Become a veritable expert on Long Island and its people with gregarious Max and the sweet, chatty Liz. Such is the charm of this laid-back watering hole, visitors come back again and again. McIntosh Restaurant & Bakery

$$

This simple diner-style restaurant serves up excellent renditions of local favorites, such as fried grouper and cracked conch, and sandwiches made with thick slices of a slightly sweet Bahamian bun for lunch. At dinner, large portions of pork chops, lobster, fish, and shrimp are served with rib-sticking sides like baked macaroni and cheese, peas and rice, and coleslaw. Save room for a piece of rum cake or Key lime pie with gravity-defying meringue piled on top, baked fresh daily and displayed in the glass case up front.

Meke's Snack Shack

$
If you're looking for a simple but tasty lunch at a great price, check out this octagonal wooden takeout-only restaurant on the western end of Bay Street. The burgers are hand-formed and served up on homemade buns—the spicy bacon cheeseburger is a local favorite. Grab a box of their fried chicken if you're headed out in the boat for a day of exploring, and on a hot day, their homemade ice cream in an array of tropical flavors including coconut, guava, pineapple, and mango is delicious and refreshing. The only seating is on a handful of park benches nearby.

Moonshine Bar & Grill

$

The views surrounding Stella Maris Resort Club's new poolside bar are as beautiful as the frozen fresh-fruit daiquiris they serve. Once a week Rake 'n' Scrape musicians pluck your heartstrings with Bahamian and calypso songs. On the bar's west side is the sunbaked pool with lounges; to the south, a kids' playground and beachy cove; and to the north, a long boardwalk to a carved-out ocean pool and spectacular views of the coastal bluffs with the waves breaking over the coral reefs. Go for a snorkel when it's calm or enjoy the bar decks when the breeze is up. The menu offers Bahamian and American fare. The Moonshine panini—salami, pickles, and Swiss on marble rye is a favorite.

Nesbitt's Delaporte Restaurant & Lounge

$$

The vibe in this hole-in-the-wall restaurant is set by whomever controls the jukebox, which has everything from current hits to old-school R&B to local Rake 'n' Scrape. The food is simple but hits the spot, and the lounge is a great place to meet some locals. The cracked conch and grouper (which you can have steamed, fried, or sautéed) are popular for dinner. Breakfast is standard Bahamian fare, but there are omelets for the less adventurous. Late-night revelers head here to ward off a hangover with a plate of greasy fried chicken, a pork chop, or conch bites. Feel free to get up and dance if the mood strikes.

New Sunset Inn Restaurant

$$

This easily overlooked restaurant is a favorite among Eleuthera natives. While it may not look like it from the outside, New Sunset Inn serves some of the most delicious Bahamian dishes on the island. There's an indoor dining area along with a dining deck that features stunning views of the harbor. It's a great place to have a quiet dinner, and the staff is friendly and accommodating.

The open-kitchen concept includes a a raw bar and a large sushi bar offering a selection of maki (splurge on the Goldwynn Roll, which is stuffed with garlic lobster and A5 strip loin) and sashimi nigiri. From the grill, there's something for everyone—salmon, sea bass, short ribs, filet mignon, chicken, and a huge tomahawk steak—some with an Asian flair and others featuring the flavors of Greek cuisine. There's also an extensive breakfast menu that leans more to standard American fare.

The Pavilion

One of the only restaurants that's made a comeback in the Treasure Cay area offers a menu with the standard delicious Bahamian dishes you'd expect for both lunch and dinner. Seating is inside or outdoors poolside. If you have a special occasion to celebrate, talk to the team about setting up a table for two or 20 right on the beach.

A more upscale, albeit dated, version of the other Poop Deck in Nassau, this waterside restaurant has soaring ceilings and a dazzling view of the ocean. Seafood is the star on the menu here: shrimp, lobster, calamari, grouper, and, of course, conch. There are only a few offerings for the seafood-phobic. Riding Rock Seafront Restaurant

$$$$

This 100-seat restaurant offers seating indoors, by the pool, and on the back patio overlooking the ocean. During slower seasons or depending on resort guests, the restaurant is not always open, and each meal is set between certain hours—make sure to call ahead. Fruit, fresh-baked breads, pancakes, and eggs any style with bacon and grits are a good way to start the day. Burgers, sandwiches, conch chowder, and cracked conch are lunch favorites. The just-off-the-boat catch of the day—wahoo, mahimahi, tuna, grouper, or snapper, depending on what's in season—grilled with lemon and butter or baked with tomatoes and spices, is the dinner specialty. Broiled or stuffed lobster (in season), barbecue shrimp, steaks, and chicken round out the choices, though all are not available each evening as the menu changes based on availability. Dinner includes the entrée, soup, sides, and a glass of wine.

The chef-owners Chloe (pronounced "Klo") and Bertram Knowles serve some of the best food on the island (including Bahamian stewed fish for breakfast with 24-hours notice)—and the prices are affordable (Delmonico steak for just $32 and lobster for $28).
