Pete's Pub

$$ Fodor's Choice

Next door to Pete's Gallery is an outdoor tiki hut restaurant and bar where you can wiggle your toes in the sand while you chow down on fresh seafood, burgers, and cold tropical drinks. Try the mango-glazed grouper, lemon-pepper mahimahi, or coconut-cracked conch while you kick back and enjoy the view of the harbor. It's a long drive, so in the slow season, call ahead to make sure they're open.

Pier One Restaurant and Sushi Bar

$$ Fodor's Choice

Pier One has one of the most unique settings of any restaurant in Grand Bahama and two different menus to choose from: sushi or cooked continental fare. Built on stilts above the ocean near Freeport Harbour, it offers one-of-a-kind views of magnificent sunsets, larger-than-life cruise ships departing, and sharks swimming for chum. The sushi menu is both creative and extensive. Diners can eat inside or outside, but the large tables on the balcony offer the best views of the shark feedings, which happen every hour on the hour starting at 7 pm. For those who prefer their food cooked, the other menu includes grilled fish, vegetable pasta, steaks, and chicken.

In Black Sound, at the entrance to The Other Shore Club and Marina, you'll find this simple open-air restaurant with a canopy-shaded bar and picnic tables next to the pool. You can tie up at their small dock if you're on a boat. Some of the best conch fritters in the islands are served from 11 am on. At lunch, try a fresh salad or spicy jerk chicken; for dinner, grilled daily-caught fish.

The Pink Shack

$$ Fodor's Choice

The name describes this vibrant and popular roadside eatery and bar perfectly. It's a wooden pink shack on the roadside of busy West Bay Street. This hot spot is chill and casual, with outdoor seating and a simple but delicious menu. Food is cooked in the tiny, no-frills outside kitchen, and every morsel is delicious. The burgers are thick house-made patties in island bread, with all the toppings. Besides burgers, there are Bahamian standards served snack style with a side of fries. Try the cracked conch, grilled pork, or fish fingers. Whether you're the only ones there or the place is packed, head to the bar to order your drinks or you'll be waiting a long time for table service.

S sinn L Restaurant & Bar Lounge

$ | Matthew Town Fodor's Choice
The best spot to dine and even party is at S sinn L in Matthew Town, which becomes Inagua's dance hot spot on the weekend. In a comfortable, smart, air-conditioned dining room, you can enjoy delicious fresh Bahamian breakfasts, lunches, and dinners with some American fare as well. The bar gets lively, too, so take a chance to enjoy some local beer or rum and coke or the more exotic Bahama Mama. Dance to live calypso and Bahamian Goombay.

Shannas Cove Restaurant

$$$$ Fodor's Choice

This resort restaurant boasts a beautiful towering view above the sea and the north point of the island and offers three meals a day on the breezy veranda or in the cool interior. The German owners take their European cuisine seriously, and they please and surprise hotel guests and those from other resorts who drive far to dine here. Replete with homemade breads, cheeses, viands, and fruits (or eggs cooked to order), breakfast is a delight, while the lunch menu features large fresh salads and homemade 12-inch pizzas. Dinner's three-course menu varies nightly and might include rack of lamb, pork tenderloin, steaks, lobster, or grilled fish. Dinner typically begins with cocktails at 7 pm, followed by serving of the set menu. Call well in advance. The cocktails and coffee at the bar are also good.

Shima

$$$ Fodor's Choice

Enjoy authentic Southeast Asian–inspired cuisine at this popular restaurant and bar. The little fire symbols peppered throughout the menu indicate their propensity for spice, but they're happy to tone things down if you ask. Start off with the dumplings—the best on the island—or the unique crispy soft-boiled eggs. From there, the green papaya salad is a popular hit as are the selection of curries. It's a bit far from most hotels, but your taste buds will thank you.

The Shipyard

$$$ Fodor's Choice

Located on the eastern tip of Spanish Wells, just where the ocean separates the town from North Eleuthera, the waterfront views from here are stunning. The dinner menu includes classic Bahamian meals as well as international dishes like English pub fish-and-chips and cubano pork. There's also a full-service bar with a pool table upstairs if you want to stop by and have a drink, and on Friday, there's live music.

Shirley's at The Fish Fry

$$ Fodor's Choice

At buzzing The Fish Fry hot spot in Great Exuma, Shirley's is the most popular restaurant of them all, with its chill atmosphere and delicious food. The colorful, quaint little shack is just a stone's throw away from the beach, so there's a great view from the outdoor dining deck. There is also an indoor dining area. The menu is a bit limited but offers the best of Bahamian cuisine, with conch, fish, and other seafood dishes.

Shuang Ba

$$$ Fodor's Choice

With a team of chefs flown in from China, this is as close as you can get to authentic Chinese cuisine on the island. The menu includes dim sum for starters and the impressive Pork Pyramid, which is made with one piece of braised pork belly that is sliced into thin strips and shaped into a pyramid with pickled Chinese mustard inside, served with a freshly steamed bao bun. The chefs take advantage of local seafood, including conch, but the other traditional must-try is the Peking duck. When you are done with your pancakes, they whisk the carcass away to make the most delectable stir-fry or soup. Reservations are not required, but it's a small restaurant that tends to book out weeks in advance.

Smith's Point Fish Fry

$ Fodor's Choice

For the most authentic Bahamian food, head to Smith's Point for the famous weekly fish fry. Every Wednesday night, this little settlement by Taino Beach comes to life when the open-air beach shacks along the street serve fried fish (with the head and tail still on), cracked conch (pounded and fried), lobster tail, fried grouper, and barbecue chicken down-home style. Outriggers Beach Club is the generational property of an old island family, and the most popular, but you'll often find long lines. Try any of the other stands, including Da Bus Stop, Gully Wash Beach Bar, Snapper Shoal, and Penny's Fish Fry for similar menus. Restaurants start serving around 6 pm. Come early for the food; stay late for the party. Occasional beach bonfires add to the fun and festive atmosphere.

There's also an outdoor dining area if you prefer feeling the ocean breeze and warm weather while you eat. The restaurant's menu features a range of Bahamian specialties and American favorites. Spritz Restaurant & Bar

$$ Fodor's Choice

This casual, open-air restaurant and bar overlooks the Sandyport Canal and the pedestrian-only streets of the Old Towne at Sandyport. Seating is limited, so reservations are recommended, especially for busy weekend nights. The wood-fired pizzas are a local favorite, and their northern Italian chef brings a taste of his hometown with a wide selection of pasta dishes.

The Stoned Crab

$$$ Fodor's Choice

The Stoned Crab is a place to see and be seen. Open glass walls all around provide every seat with a view of the ocean off Taino Beach, and vaulted white wooden ceilings that rise into the spectacular dual triangular peaked roof make it feel larger than it is. They serve delicious options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu is an eclectic mix with culinary hints from around the world. Nutella crepes, a full English breakfast, or Mississippi-style shrimp-and-grits get the day started, and later you can nosh on Thai chicken curry, rack of lamb, or stone crab legs (in season). At lunch, you can dine inside or grab one of the luxurious lounge chairs on the beach and have your food and drinks served right there.

Studio Cafe

$$ Fodor's Choice

This cozy upstairs restaurant pays homage to its former life as Compass Point Studio, where Bob Marley, the Rolling Stones, and James Brown used to record. In addition to Asian-fusion cuisine, they have a burger named after the B52s, live music or karaoke most Fridays, an acoustic brunch on Sunday, and rich desserts.

Sugar Factory American Brasserie

$$$ Fodor's Choice

Charge up your phone before you head to this funky spot—you'll want to take pictures of your food. For the ultimate fun factor, start with a platter of sliders served on a rainbow of colorful buns or the fried mac-and-cheese pops and end with a nostalgia-inducing milkshake or cocktail. Choose from a full menu of heaping burgers; perhaps the most photo-worthy is the Flamin' Hot Cheetos burger. There's a selection of soups, salads, pasta dishes, and sandwiches, as well as entrées like surf and turf, chicken and waffles, and steaks. Save space for a milkshake that's a feast for the eyes and the belly; whatever your candy choice, there's one to suit you. A crowd-pleaser is the King Kong Sundae that feeds 12 people. Adults can choose from a full menu of eye-pleasing cocktails served in goblets that require two hands to drink and take you back to childhood memories of Astro pops, gummies in all different shapes, and rock candy.

Sun & Ice

$ Fodor's Choice

Nothing beats ice cream to cool off after a hot day on the beach or by the pool. This local ice-cream shop serving unique Bahamian flavors is located in the heart of The Coral lobby in Atlantis and often has a long line, but it's worth the wait. Bahamian chef Wayne Moncur has whipped up frozen culinary delights like soursop, guava, and sugar banana using native fruits and a mint chocolate chip using locally crafted Mortimer Candies. This is also a great spot to grab a quick and simple breakfast pastry and coffee.

Thirsty Cuda

$ Fodor's Choice

Be prepared to get wet to order your meal or drink from this floating food truck—it's anchored in waist-deep water off Tahiti Beach at the end of Elbow Cay. The sesame conch bites, burgers, and potent libations are worth wading out for. Check the weather forecast before making the trip—they're only there if the weather's good. If it is, they'll be there daily from noon until five.

Tippy's Restaurant and Beachside Bar

$$ Fodor's Choice

Despite its barefoot-casual environment (old window shutters used as tabletops, sand in the floor's crevices), the menu at this open-air beach bistro is a sophisticated mix of Bahamian and European cuisine, with items that change daily based on the availability of fresh local products. Expect things like lobster tails, specialty pizza, and fresh fish prepared with some sort of delectable twist. This place may look like a beach shack, but everything has been well planned—the owners even imported a French chef to satisfy discriminating palates.
