Arcadia Lodge

$$$ | 10 Florance Ave., Russell, 0202, New Zealand Fodor's Choice

This B&B, perched over Matauwhi Bay a few minutes' walk from town, had been supported for more than 100 years by whale vertebrae, which served as the backbones of this turn-of-the-20th-century home. One of the "backbones" of the house now sits in the lounge. Two spacious suites off the large guest lounge and dining area both have brass beds, sunrooms, and their own decks. Another three rooms are upstairs. The Tautoru Room has its own entrance, with a deck and a view of the bay where you can watch the boats coming and going from the Russell Boat Club (the club's bar is a good place to meet locals). Wake up with an appetite; breakfast is always good and varies depending on what you might have requested or what the hosts have in mind to delight you.

Pros

  • Lovely rooms
  • Spectacular views
  • Decadent breakfast

Cons

  • Finding the parking lot is tricky so follow the directions on the website
  • No beach access or pool

Copthorne Hotel and Resort Bay of Islands

$$ | Tau Henare Dr., Waitangi, 0293, New Zealand

The biggest hotel north of Auckland and a favorite with tour groups, this complex sprawls along a peninsula within walking distance of the Treaty House. Garden- and ocean-facing rooms are decorated in a French provincial style, with yellows and blues and wrought-iron light fixtures. Most rooms have a terrace or patio, giving them an airier feeling.  It's very popular at the beginning of February when the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi is commemorated.

Duke of Marlborough Hotel

$$$ | 35 The Strand, Russell, 0202, New Zealand

This waterfront hotel is a favorite with the yachting fraternity, for whom ready access to the harbor and the bar downstairs are the most important considerations. That means staying here will place in you the thick of the noisy action during the busy summer breaks. Antiques add character and the rooms are bright and cheerful. The hotel has a history with fire---the previous three incarnations were burned down (the first by the legendary Māori chief Hone Heke). For more space, opt for one of the waterfront suites with large whirlpool baths, or there's a one-bedroom bungalow right on the waterfront. It gets very busy in the holiday periods so you must book ahead.

Pros

  • Prime waterfront position
  • Fun crowds
  • Good restaurant

Cons

  • Can be too close to the action
  • Quite noisy
  • Little privacy
