Established in 1854 as New Zealand's first department store, Ballantynes is an institution in the South Island. Far from allowing its traditions to slow it down, it has morphed into a world-class shopping experience with some of the best New Zealand and international designer brand names all under one roof. Allow plenty of time to browse the racks and shelves, where you will find everything from the latest trends, from designer concept-store items to New Zealand gifts and wine, to the very best crystal and china. When you need a break there are two cafés and a wine bar. They also have a store at the departure lounge of Christchurch Airport, where you can pick up your purchases and take advantage of tax-exempt shopping.

They have a good range of breakfasts and all-day treats made from mostly local and organic produce. There are tables indoors and out, surrounded by a courtyard full of fruit trees and vegetables.

It is one of those unlikely projects that would probably never have gotten off the ground in Christchurch before the earthquakes: turning an old former industrial tannery on the banks of the Heathcote River into a Victorian shopping mall. Not only that but the developer had each brick removed, cleaned, then put back once the buildings were reinforced. The Tannery's now an interesting place to head, with quirky shops, fashion, deluxe cinemas, and a fabulous cake shop and deli. Try Mitchelli's Cafe Rinato for tasty food in a friendly atmosphere or The Brewery for craft beers and superb wood-fired pizza.

Looking more like a shearing shed than a store, The Tin Shed is exactly that. Surrounded by farmland and animals, it is an authentic piece of rural New Zealand architecture being put to good use. Inside is a selection of lifestyle and handmade clothing. There's a good range of merino and possum-fur knits and shawls, knitwear, thermals, oilskins, sheepskin footwear, and locally produced skin-care items. This is a great spot to stock up with gifts before leaving the country, and they can arrange shipping. Watch the turn-in off the main road as traffic moves fast here.

It was only ever meant to be a temporary solution but this quirky shopping precinct with its colorful funky look has been kept in place for just a bit longer, because it's just so cute. It is set to close by January 2017 to make way for new shopping precincts now being built nearby. Made from shipping containers, there are more than 40 shops here, anchored by Ballantynes, one of the country's better-known department stores. There are trendy fashion boutiques and great cafés, and there's free Wi-Fi.
