The Best Sight in Taveuni, Fiji

Background Illustration for Sights

Taveuni is unique because many of the island's top accommodations are within walking distance of Matei airport, which is on the island's northern tip. None of these is especially close to the island's star attraction, Bouma National Heritage Park. The Matei area is the closest, about a 35-minute drive away. The farther south you go, the rougher the road gets and thus the time it takes to get to the park is compounded. The resorts will arrange tours and excursions of any kind and, if possible, dive boats will usually pick up guests right from their beachfront.

Waitabu Marine Park & Campground

Swim and snorkel over a fringing reef that has been a marine-protected area (MPA) since 1998, when the Waitabu people and other villages agreed to stop overfishing. There are guided snorkeling tours using bilibili or traditional bamboo rafts followed by tea and music on the beach. A cheaper option does not include rafts or tea. The campground offers 12 tent sites near the water's edge, and communal cooking and bathroom facilities. It's slightly north of Vidawa village on the coast.
