Coconut Grove Beachfront Cottages

$$$ | Taveuni, Fiji

With Bouma National Park and three diving companies nearby, this can be the setting for a very active holiday, but most guests choose this three-cottage resort for just the opposite reason. The cottages are a few steps from the beach (unusual for Taveuni) and each has tropical light-wood furnishings, a queen-size bed, porch, and hammock. The two pricier ones have private outdoor showers (the Mango cottage's is grander); the third has an indoor shower and shares an outdoor one with guests coming off the sand. The dining porch's modest plastic furnishings thankfully do not reflect its restaurant-style international cuisine. Choosing the F$135 all-inclusive meal plan allows you to focus that much more on relaxing.

Pros

  • Privacy
  • Personal service
  • Nice beach

Cons

  • Dining experience lacks ambience

Garden Island Resort

$$ | Taveuni, Fiji

Its proximity to the famed Rainbow Reef and great-value packages make this one of Fiji's top dive resorts. Experienced divers come here again and again for the award-winning Aqua-Trek dive team, including a dive master with 19 years' experience at this resort alone, the high-quality equipment, and the value. It's a 10- to 30-minute ride out to most dive sites, all on the Rainbow Reef. The resort rents underwater cameras and has facilities for developing and viewing slides and for viewing videos. Rooms in the hotel are clean and simple with queen and single or queen and double beds; those on the ground floor lead right out onto the lawn while those above have small balconies. The dorms are shared four-bed hotel rooms. A pretty oceanfront pool and full spa offerings round out the facilities. The restaurant offers hearty traditional Fijian and European dishes. Matangi Private Island Resort

$$$$ | Taveuni, Fiji

Its beachfront "Treehouse" bure first put this family-owned boutique resort on the map and its stylish infinity pool and soaring open-air dining bure are likely to keep it there. Island bure lack air-conditioning and have outdated bathrooms; most guests stay in the spacious beachfronts, which have intricately tiled outdoor showers (as well as indoor ones) and a polished-natural feel. The split-level Treehouse bure built into pacific almond trees are another big step up (an impressive flight of them, actually), with dual basin sinks on timber-slab counters and outdoor lava rock showers. There's also a large villa. All bure are steps from the ocean and a sand-path makes footwear unnecessary. The resort guards its honeymooners' right to private picnics on the island's breathtaking Horseshoe Bay and scenic hiking, outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving are also options. Menus fuse international and Pacific Rim fare and offer a great selection.

Pros

  • Choice of three entrées at dinner
  • Great snorkeling and diving
  • Warm staff

Cons

  • Beachfront bure bathrooms could be bigger

Paradise Taveuni

$$$$ | Vuna Rd., Taveuni, Fiji

Luxury amenities and its small size attract couples and families to this boutique property. Local village tours, bird-watching, snorkeling safaris, diving, kayaking, horseback riding, and trips to Bouma National Heritage Park keep most guests busy during the day; private outdoor two-person Jacuzzi tubs and showers, an indoor shower-bath, and indigenous decor surrounding a queen-size bed welcome them back at night. Bure sleep up to four with two convertible daybeds: ocean views face onto a large lawn, which curves away toward the sea; garden views are in a second row, looking out from between the other bure. Included meals are a continental breakfast, one-course lunch, and two-course dinner. Dinners, taken wherever guests like, include three theme nights and four à la carte nights.

Pros

  • Intimate resort size
  • Great diving
  • Jacuzzis in Oceanfront bure

Qamea Resort and Spa

$$$$ | Taveuni, Fiji

Guests rave about the staff at this fun couples resort, which merges particularly suave rooms with a natural setting. Staff-guest volleyball matches and sunset crabbing are the playful side while lounge-style lighting in the dining bure and a do-not-disturb red coconut foster the honeymooner appeal. All the bure are within steps of the beach and feature an outdoor shower, daybed living area and—great touch—heated towel racks. Honeymoon bure have hot tubs and more central location while Premium bure, set apart on the ground, feature daybeds on their decks and small private pools. Snorkeling is good straight off the beach and there's excellent diving nearby. A brand-new rain-forest spa with Guinot products has beachside massage tables. Meals offer plenty of selection and the California-style (lighter) Pacific Rim and international dishes are supplemented by a complimentary sunset cocktail and hor d'oeuvres. Owing to room and beachside meal service, some honeymooners are rarely seen. Qamea is a 30-minute combination van-and-boat ride from Taveuni's airport.

Pros

  • Exceptional, personable staff
  • Great snorkeling and diving
  • Intimate size

Cons

  • Food not consistently five-star
  • Dimly lighted bures

Taveuni Island Resort

$$$$ | Taveuni, Fiji

Some of the sexiest bure in Fiji and dramatic cliff-top ocean views draw honeymooners and couples to this all-inclusive. All bure have dark tile-and-wood interiors, romantic beds with coconut husk frames and mood lighting, frosted glass bowl sinks, and outdoor showers. Among the Oceanview bure, "Niusawa" gets noise from the kitchen before meals. Oceanfront bure are but a small step up in price from Oceanviews and have the front row. The Villa has its own pool, staff, and includes alcoholic beverages. You can see the ocean from every bed and steps lead through a garden down to a long strip of white-sand beach. The dining room is a sleek city-style affair but you can enjoy the Indo-Euro-Fijian cuisine at a cliff-edge bure, on the beach, or on your bure's deck. The resort offers diving at some of Fiji's premiere sites, picnic trips to smaller islands, and easy access to Taveuni's many natural attractions.

Pros

  • Unique cliff-bottom beach
  • Great diving and snorkeling
  • Pretty spa

Cons

  • Bure seem close
  • Some Oceanviews look between bure to the ocean

Taveuni Palms

$$$$ | Taveuni, Fiji

Prior to opening this two-villa resort, Kelly and Tony Acland asked the billionaires whose private yachts they worked on what they desired in a getaway. Topping the list were privacy, personalized service, and value—all three of which this resort offers to the extreme. Each two-bedroom villa is set on 1 acre and has a staff of seven including a chef who designs guests' all-inclusive menu, including five-course dinners, in consultation with them prior to their arrival. One villa has a modern feel with marble floors, its hot tub alongside the house and an elevated view. The others are solid South Pacific with hardwood floors, hot tub bure, and beachfront location. Both have super-king beds with 900-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets and 24-hour service is an intercom button away. Each comes with a personal boat, van, and staff to match for a two-tank dive and picnic lunch on a smaller island or a guided tour of Bouma National Park and a lobster lunch.

Pros

  • Total privacy
  • Ultrapersonalized experience
  • Fantastic-value extras

Cons

  • Seclusion
