Stretch Your Muscles

WHERE: San Francisco International Airport

At SFO, you can find a quiet space to breathe and reset at each of the airport terminals. The self-guided yoga rooms (open from 4 a.m.-11 p.m.) are equipped with mats for stretching, meditating, and simply decompressing. And if you run into the Wag Brigade, you will get a real treat. The team of certified therapy dogs, as well as cats, a rabbit, and a pig, works in partnership with the SF Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to help reduce travel stress and provide free affection. Look for vests that read “Pet Me!” and let the tail wags do the rest.

Get a Dose of Literature

WHERE: Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

Sometimes the best airport luxury is cozying up to a peaceful corner with a good book. At Schiphol, you can browse through books about Dutch culture and history at the world’s first airport library. The sanctuary is open 24 hours and offers over 1,200 books in dozens of languages, so you can easily find something that sparks your interest.

Walk in the Forest

WHERE: Singapore Changi Airport

Arriving at Changi’s Jewel feels like stepping into a rainforest rather than an airport. Wander through five levels of indoor walking trails across a suspension bridge, leading through butterfly gardens and an art installation, and around the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, at 131-feet – called the Rain Vortex. In between peaceful strolls, you can pop into a movie theater for free, hang out at the rooftop pool (with an entry fee), grab Singaporean street food, and shop for designer brands (usually open 10 a.m.-10 p.m.).

Sip a Craft Beer

WHERE: Brisbane Airport

You won’t need to leave the terminal to quench your thirst for a pint of really good beer in Australia. As part of its $5B transformation ahead of the 2032 Olympics, Brisbane Airport has introduced the world’s first on-site brewery and distillery combination at an airport. Located at the Skygate precinct, 4 Pines Brewery is not your typical terminal bar. The 800-capacity venue features 32 draught taps, including two rotating “here today, never to be seen again” beers brewed on-site, fresh gin distilled on-site, a gastropub, and an outdoor beer garden. It’s part of a 16-hectare entertainment hub (four times the size of Howard Smith Wharves) that’s accessible via free bus from domestic and international terminals. Allow for a minimum three-hour layover to settle in with a pint.

There’s also a tropical indoor garden to soothe your senses before the next leg of your journey. It’s open to all passengers for a fee from 6 a.m.-2 a.m. daily.

Watch a Cultural Performance

WHERE: Seoul Incheon Airport

Incheon Airport brings South Korean culture directly into the airport, making layovers culturally enriching. There are royal grand processions showcasing traditional costumes and dances, as well as art and craft exhibits. Try your hand at free workshops to learn to make hanji paper jewelry boxes, knotting techniques, painted fans, and phone charms. The programs rotate seasonally, so make sure to catch them each time you pass through the airport.
