A little whimsy for today. Basel's Christmas market is internationally known, but another seasonal event enjoyed by the locals is the Harley Santas ride. Held annually on a Saturday in Advent, 'the motorcyclists elaborately decorate their Harleys and ride into the city as a group. They hand out presents on Marktplatz and then park up near the Hotel Basel, giving people a chance to look over the decorated bikes while the riders enjoy their own get-together. Fun for all!

The Appenzell area is seldom discussed on Swiss posts. A shame, as it's beautiful countryside with plenty of hiking and snow sports. And Appenzell itself is a pretty small town worth spending some time it (great beer brewed there too).

We spent a few days this month in Zurich, staying at the Sorell St. Peter hotel in the Altstadt. Had a wonderful time. Zurich's Altstadt seems to be significantly under-rated on Fodors. We've been to many German cities over the holiday period and find Zurich's historic town center to be just as attractive as many of those DE destinations. Plus enjoyed some great food at Bindella, Tao's, and Cafe Montmartre.
