Cappuccini Convento closed!!

For those of you planning a trip to Amalfi, please be aware that this famous site is no longer in operation. I found this out the hard way by scaling the steep steps of the Via Annunziatella that lead to the Convento, only to be informed by a local that the police had closed it in December of 2002! This was particularly galling to me since I have been doing research on the 'net for my vacation for the last 9 months or so and NOWHERE did I find this mentioned, including (ahem) Fodor's.com.

The Cappuccini Convento is a hotel & is closed indefinately for renovation.I was not aware that it was a famous site.
You can vist the Hotel Luna Convento in Amalfi which has the same type of atmosphere and surroundings.

Has this hotel reopened? It is a site from a painting my wife and I have that we wanted to visit and stay a couple of nights. If it has reopened, is there a website?

With the information that Eloise provided, I was able to find the following link: http://www.framonhotelgroup.com/en/amalfi/index.html

The hotel is changing its name and is opening again in 2007, precisely when is unknown to me presently, but I have e-mailed the Framon Group to ask about a planned month in which it may open and if they reply, I will post the answer here.

It has wonderful views and as a Monastery was always a stop on the Grand Tour and it features on many of the original paintings and postcards of Amalfi and it has been sad to see its decline over the last few years

Hi Gerardo. The good news is that I bet once it is restored it will be exquisite!

The Framon group impressed us so much. We stayed on Vulcano because we knew they had a hotel there. Earlier on our trip we had very much enjoyed our stay at their hotel in Taormina.

Ciao Pilates,

Unfortunately I have to report that there is no building work being carried out and it will need a miracle of St Andrew for it to open in 2008

Ciao Gerardo, Che peccato!

Whenever I hear of work coming to a halt in Italy, I think, "Oh maybe they found some ancient treasure during remodeling and now the antiquity experts will be called in before work can continue." But, maybe they just don't have the money to continue. In any case, it sounds like it was a really neat place to visit and I hope that someone will be able to restore the Monastery someday soon. Mi manca l'italia.

It was only this past week I e-mailed the Framon group to ask about plans for an opening in 2008. They have a link that says it will open in 2008. However, I have had no reply. That said, they were to have opened it in 2006, then pushed it to 2007, then pushed it to 2008.

If anyone gets reliable information on the hotel opening, please post the information!
