Your favorites on/off Broadway playing now?

We are trying to firm up our schedule and are looking to see one or two plays. I believe that we will try to see Gypsy or Hairspray (suggestions?), but are open to anything great that you have seen or have heard is "can't miss".

We are in our 40s and would enjoy musicals, comedy...most anything of high quality.

Thank you.

Definitely see Gypsy. I saw the Encores production and was blown away.

Haven't seen it yet, but August Osage County is another 'must see' this season. It's not a comedy, but the acting is supposed to be incredible.

I love STOMP, particularly in the theatre in NYC.

I didn't like STOMP very much.
I've voted on your other thread, but Wicked for sure.

Spring Awakening is terrific and won the Tony for best musical in 2007. I also love Avenue Q, Wicked, and Jersey Boys-My mom loved all of these as well. Which one I would suggest depends on whether you want something serious or happy, whether you want a discounted show (Avenue Q and Spring Awakening are both discounted) and when you're going - Wicked and Jersey Boys often need to be booked well in advance. I enjoyed Hairspray, but it's not my favorite.

I've heard amazing things about a bunch of plays: August: Ausage County, The Homecoming, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - all of which have amazing casts.

I also saw The Seagull (off-Broadway)-it didn't get amazing reviews, but I thought it was great and Diane Wiest and Alan Cumming are terrific.

Have a great time!!

Augustsage County. When the play started I said "Oh, Jeez. Another dysfunctional family play!" BUT WAIT. It's so much more. Many levels and textures. Sadness. Tragedy. Plenty of laughs. A great play. And dont forget the excellent Jersey Boys.
