When our kids were younger, we traveled to many of the places mentioned in above posts. There is a book called "Beach Freaks Guide to the best beaches in Michigan" or something like that - it follows the michigan coastline and gives details of ALL of the parks, beaches, etc, all along the entire coast! All time fav book, includes a lot of hidden gems great tips to get the most of places. Get it! Other things you may be interested in; float on the Platte river (fun), Mac Dune rides in Mears (Silver Lake), climb the dunes either at Sleeping Bear or Warren Dunes (Bridgeman #16)

Becky, I assume that you have already checked out what it's going to cost you in terms of parking, if you are staying at a hotel or B&B in Chicago those first two days. It's quite a chunk of change for someone on a stricter budget.
