Young Frankenstein - He Vas My Boyfriend!!
After having just seen the preview in Seattle Saturday night, all I can say is, go see it. I hate to post spoilers so I will say the following:
1. Great Cast
2. Great Music & Lyrics
3. Great Choreography
4. Great set design
Read on only if you want to know more.
Some have criticized the play for being too long. Hey, it's previews folks. It's been tightened up and about 15 minutes shorter than the original 3 hours with intermission. Not to worry, it zooms by. I am not a theater critic and I am easy to please but I do know talent when I see it and this production is hilarious. Megan Mulally is not in it for very much of the play but boy does she leave a lasting impression. Her rendition of "Deep Love" in the second act is pure delight. Andrea Martin had an understudy Saturday night so I missed her rendition of "He Vas My Boyfriend". I understand she uses the chair ala Bob Fosse's choreography in Cabaret. But truly, the entire cast including ensemble in "Putting on the Ritz" with incredible lighting and dancing was just wonderful. I am a Mel Brooks fan, I make no bones about it. The fact that he uses some passages straight from the movie didn't bother me at all. The scene with the blind man was hysterical. Sutton Foster does not exactly have the same feel as the innocent ingenue Teri Garr portrayed in the movie, but her comedic timing is just as good and her singing, especially the yodeling is terrific. Roger Bart as Dr. Frankenstein, Igor and the Monster all are very good. I would say there were one or two parts where it did drag a little to further the plot but all in all a minor quibble of a great production.

Megan plays Elizabeth, Dr. Frankenstein's non-touchable girlfriend. She has a limited role, one song in the first act, "Please Don't Touch Me" and then returns to fall in love with the monster at the end of the second act. Madeline Kahn was delicious in the movie but Megan makes it her own as they say in the business. Darn, I wish I was going opening night. That's going to be a night to remember.

I agreee. I posted this on the Fodorite Lounge: Mel Brook's new musical, based on the movie, was a huge crowd pleaser when we saw it yesterday at Seattle's Paramount Theater. The actors are uniformly great, the production is spectacular, the songs are melodious, and the laughs are steady. It is hard to imagine that this show will not be a bit hit on Broadway, where it is scheduled to open in early November.
Another favorite number for me was "Roll in the Hay," and I was disappointed that Andrea Martin did not appear on the matinee on Sunday the 26th.

I just saw it last night--what fun!!! I'm still giggling this morning, thinking of the Monster trying to sing his lines in "Putting on the Ritz"--hysterical.
Andrea Martin as Frau Blucher (neigh!) was fantastic--I think she was my favorite but I enjoyed the entire cast. A very enjoyable evening.
