Dear fellow Fodorites, I'm endeavouring to ascertain the weather in Yosemite during late August. I know it's the northern hemisphere (late) summer, but I understand some of Yosemite is quite high country and so am unsure of what to bring in the way of clothes. Can it get cold/snowy even in late August?

In August, the average high is 82 F., the average low is 51 F., and it seldom rains. I found this information using the following link:

It's hot and dry in August. The trail may be quite dusty. Sometimes there are forest fires.

I would not be concerned about cold or snow.

You must have accomodation reservations if you want to stay in the park. You can go to the National Park website to research them. http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/index.htm

Yosemite covers hundreds of square miles -- htty's post reflects the temps IN Yosemite Valley --the high country will be cooler. It probably won't be cold in the back country -- unless you are up there over night when it can be in the 40's or even freezing.

Temps at the high elevation over Tioga Pass/the meadows will seem warmer during the day than the actual number. Because of the thin/clear air 60's and 70's can feel like 80's/low 90's.

On the Valley floor it can be anywhere from the low 70's to 100F during the day and 20-30+ degrees F lower at night.

It will definitely be shorts weather --but you'll also want long pants/a fleece for evenings. Also -- there can be short thunder storms in the afternoon

It was hot, I went 2 years ago in late August, around 30+ celcius everyday.

Tshirts, shorts. Cooler in evening but still shorts weather as I recall. No need for pants or fleece for me.

It is good to have layers with you and to prepare for cool evenings, just in case. Cold is relative to what you are used to and to the climate you live in. The Yosemite Valley itself is at a lower elevation and can be quite warm during the day. But, even then, a fleece at night might be needed. Other areas of the park are at higher elevations and can be cooler at night.

As pointed out above, you can get afternoon thundershowers that time of year.
