Yakima to Yosemite

Yakima to Yosemite
I'm planning a tent camping trip for my family of 4 (2 kids: 14 & 4). We want to enjoy camping, scenic drive, and more camping, with lots of fun, interactive family activities at the campground.
There is plenty online to suggest Yosemite is a good family camping opportunity.
questions:
1. 14 hour drive seems too long a day down. Where is a good place to stop for the night with a good family eatery and HI Express? I'd like to get to Sacramento, because the 4 year old loves the IKEA there for dinner.
2. We'd like to find the best tent campground in Yosemite that we can get a reservation for, but it may be too late for this August already. Advice on best one to be near short hikes and the family activities in the Valley? Just us and our black lab. We might rent bikes.
3. What do you recommend to do there with kids and as a general bucket list?
Finally, is August a good month to go do Yosemite? I heard the falls dry up by the end of summer, and I want to see the falls running strong. Would that need to be July next year then?

If you're coming down US 97, there is a HIE in K-Falls.

On the way back you might want to see if you can get a campsite at one of the 2 campgrounds in Crater Lake NP.

You can look for campground cancellations.
It's been another dry winter so you won't be seeing much in the way of waterfalls - but then the seasonal ones are usually dry by August anyway.
Both Redding and Sacramento will be hot in August. Wouldn't it make more sense to drive further east instead of taking Interstate 5?

Yes, Redding, the Central Valley and Sacramento will be hot. Just drive through with the AC on high.
Top off the tank in K-Falls and somewhere before reaching Sacramento.
