York or Ogunquit
Anyone know of the Katahdin Inn in York Beach? I'm trying to decide between this place (faces the ocean) and someplace in Ogunquit on Shore Rd. (either Pink Blossom, Sea Castles or Sparhawk).
Suggestions anyone? Thanks.

It really depends on what your priorities are for your stay. I've not heard of the Katahdhin. York Beach and Ogunquit have different "feel" to them. IMO York beach is more family oriented, you'd be in walking distance to short sands beach, Goldenrod Taffy (where you can watch the old fashioned taffy making process in the store windiws), and York wild animal farm/amusement park.
To me Ogunquit is has more for adults in the way of shopping/restaurants either in town or Perkins cove and beautiful for stolling along the Marginal Way or down shore rd.. That said, Ogunquit is plenty family oriented as well, and only a few miles from York if you want to visit both. The beach will be great either place, but he water will be cold.
As for the Ogunquit lodging all the places you mention are bigger than the inn in York. The Sparhawk overlooks the ocean at the start of the Marginal Way, Sand Castles is just across the street. Sparhawk is one of the best rated places in town. I think Sand Castles and Pink Blossoms are both pretty highly rated as well.

Thanks for your suggestions. Since I'll be traveling w/ my mid 70's mother, there is no need for "family oriented activities". Have stayed in Ogunquit before - at the Westhighland B & B so I know the area. Was thinking of perhaps trying someplace different. Wells was also on my original list of possibilities.

Yeah, Ogunquit is definately the better pick. The Sparhawk is nice, right on the ocean overlooking Ogunquit Beach. SeaCastles is a nice, very clean place, just across the street from the Sparhawk. It's not directly on the ocean, but the access to Marginal Way is right across the street and it's a very short little walk. IF you want a good place to eat, check out Hurricanes Restaurant in Perkins Cove, right down the street.

I believe that the Katahdin, which looked lovely when I last saw it about 2 years ago, overlooks Short Sands Beach (about a 2 minute walk). You would need to drive to Long Sands Beach, which is a great for walking, but fronted by kind of a touristy "tacky" collection of shops, etc. I think, but I'm not sure, you could walk to Nubble Lighthouse from Katahdin. If you've already been to Ogunquit, I'd give York a try, especially since you'll be in the Short Sands area.
