Hi all! Thanks for the info last month regarding some questions about my upcoming trip to Yellowstone.

I will be in Yellowstone May 24-29 (flying into SLC and driving up). We are staying in West Yellowstone at a hotel, so no camping.

My question is - what kind of weather is typical for this time of year?

I know that there is still snow in places, and I'm sure the weather can be varied, but any advice on the type of coats/clothes you might suggest, as well as the type of weather to expect would be much appreciated!

Dress in layers. It will be cold at night and early in the morning for sure.

I visited Yellowstone in early June 3 years ago and found that there was still a large amount of snow on the ground and trails, especially in the trees. Although this winter has been warm and dry on the west coast, I'm not sure about the Rockies, so be prepared for some trails to be closed. Also some of the higher roads (Dunraven Pass, Sylvan pass) were only opened the day before I arrived. Temperatures were in the 30's at night and warmed into the 50's by noon, but there were a few mornings in the high 20's. Good luck with the trip

This past Spring was warmer/drier than usual, but the advice to layer is always good. A jacket or heavy sweatshirt is a must, as well as jeans & good walking shoes. It may be warm enough for Summer wear during the day, but the evenings/rainy days, especially if breezy, can get cold. Side Note: If staying in West Y., try the Buffalo Bar. Their food is delicious; not all typical bar food. Great choice of local beers, too.

MereinKy, now that is a coincidence. DW and I are doing the exact same thing, just a few days earlier 5/21-24 and then on to Grand Teton. We drive back to SLC and then south to Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef. In W Yellowstone we are staying at the Moose Creek Inn.

MereinKy, one more thing, looking at past weather patterns and the projected forecast (pretty unreliable this far out) it is likely that you will encounter some rain that time of year. If you plan any hiking at all, you should have waterproof or water resistant boots or shoes. Goretex is good, or I have a pair of leather hiking shoes that are silicone impregnated. They are made by Timberland, are light and for me, comfortable. Also, do not use cotton socks. A wicking synthetic or wool is best. I prefer the synthetic.
