Yellowstone in early May

We'll be in Buffalo, WY with a group the first week of May. We'd like to drive from there to Yellowstone to spend a day or two. Is that a good idea, so early in the year? We're two older women who have never been to Wyoming before. We haven't made flight reservations yet, but have several options, including flying into Sheriden or Casper. Suggestions welcome....thanks!

The east entrance opens on May 5th this year https://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/parkroads.htm

We were in Yellowstone May 8th-11th last year and had everything from 80 degree weather to snow. It's a good time for bears and the bison have started calving.

Come in through Gardiner, MT. The Roosevelt Arch is impressive.

The Old Faithful Snow Lodge also opens on April 28th and the Old Faithful Inn on May 5th.

If you enter through the north entrance at Gardiner (which you'd have to if it's before May 5th), there are lots of accommodations in this gateway town.
