Saw a great National Geographic Documentary on Caves that featured Carlsbad Caverns.

I was hoping thsat they were near Carlsbad in California.
Oh well, there is always next time.

Yellowstone in winter is magical and they have a big New Years Eve party. I would love to go then! You might even be able to get availability if you call now.

Glacier is open, but Going to the Sun road is closed, as are most facilities.

Grand Canyon and Yosemite are also open year round and have big New Years Eve parties. A Grand Canyon sunrise on New Years Day - not many can say they've done that!

Check nps.gov for all the info you need.

I have to second the idea of Yellowstone in winter. My husband and I spent 9 days there in February 2009 and wished we had more time. Having been before in the summer, we found YS in winter to be like a totally different Park.

The only road in the Park open to cars is the one from Mammoth toward Cooke City but driving this you're likely to see elk, coyotes, bison, maybe even a wolf pack. There are also tours available from there if you don't have a car. Outside this area, travel is by snowmobile or Snowcoach.

Down at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge you can take tours to various areas or spend your time walking, snow shoeing, or cross country skiing the basin area. Xanterra, the Park concessioner, had a number of packages to choose from.

Another trip to YS in winter is on our to-do wish list.

Whatever you choose, you can't go wrong in visiting our national parks, state parks, and other wild areas. There's something for every time of year.

Now that my husband has retired, and we've bought a motor home, we hope to spend even more time exploring our beautiful country.

Utahtea, I need to look up some of your older posts for RV pointers.

Peter,

Lots of places in the U.S. for that, just up to you to pick one. Besides Yellowstone, I can recommend Breckinridge, Colorado where we spent a beautiful Christmas about 7 years ago. We tried skiing and I quickly found that I wasn't very good at it, but I sure can snow tube! We had a wonderful time.

I haven't been yet, but I've been told Williamsburg, Virgina is lovely at Christmas, though it's more focused on history than geology. I'm sure others will have more suggestions for you.

Utahtea,

I started a new thread to you in the lounge.
