I've only stayed at one place in Yellowstone, The Old Faithful Inn, but from what I saw in the rest of the park, it's got to be the nicest hotel. We loved our stay there. We ate one night at the restaurant and the food was good, not great. There isn't anywhere in the park that you'll get great food, so I wouldn't pick a hotel based on the restaurant within it. The lobby of the Old Faithful Inn is a really neat place to relax after dinner, to have a drink, watch the sunset, etc. Good luck.

Old Faithful Inn is very old and rustic--something I personally love. If you would like something newer and more modern, Old Faithful Snow Lodge is next to it and is only a few years old.
We always camp so I never get to stay at the lodges. I think it would be fun. I've heard people on this site talk about going out in the middle of the night to watch old faithful and be all by themselves. Neat!

Hi cd,
We stayed in the cabins at Canyon Lodge. They were kind of rustic, but not real bad. Well worth the money. I didn't stay at the Old Faithful Inn, but did go inside. It looks pretty nice for the kind of place this is. Really is a neat place. I didn't hear anyone complaining. But, to answer your question, yes, I think it is the best place in Yellowstone. The Snow Lodge is equally "nice", But doesn't have the "historical" factor. I agree with Kathy in that there is no place in the park to buy great food!

I've seen the Old Faithful Inn referred to as "old and rustic" a few different times. Would like to add that the room that we had last summer was quite nice, not what I would call old or rustic. It was tastfully decorated, with a modern bathroom, and very clean.

For atmosphere the best place to stay is Old Faithful Inn. It is also nice to be able to get up early and walk out to the large geyser basin.
But for location, I think the "cabins" at Canyon are the best. The word cabin doesn't describe what you get - think a hotel room in a duplex/quadplex arrangement. There are no picnic tables or places to prepare a meal - thus, not really a cabin.
But saying this, if you plan on spending a few days in the park they have a good location. Think of YNP as as a figure '8'. The canyon cabins are located on the right-hand side of the cross bar of the 8 - so you have access to both loops of the park.
Personally, my recommendation, depending on where you are entering/exiting the park is to try to stay at least one night at the Inn and the other nights at canyon.
And yes, the food at the inn is terrible. For decent food try the general store next door - they have a good diner inside.
Where ever you stay you will have a blast - don't worry too much about it, you're not going to be in your room that much anyway.
