Yankee Game?
We need some advice as there are 19 of us coming to NYC for the first time, with the youngest being 8 years old. We are staying in Manhattan at the Doubletree Guest Suites on 47th Street and 7th Avenue. We are hoping to take in a Yankees game at night and are wondering what the safest way to get to the stadium and back to our hotel would be. Please advise -- thanks alot!

Least expensive and probably fastest way is to take the subway. Go to the train station located at 42nd and 8th Ave. Take the A train (Express) going UPTOWN/THE BRONX. Get off at 161st St. station. Exit the subway and you will be right in front of Yankee Stadium. Alternative - walk to subway station located at 50th and 8th Avenue. Take the C train (local) one stop to 59th Street and change to the A train (express). About the Metro Card - not sure of this but I think you can use one card for up to four people to enter the system. Check this out to determine how many cards you will need.Train going will be crowded - train returning even more crowded.

Took the subway to a Yanks game 4 years ago. It was a day game and the individuals we saw on the train were good conversation during pregame. I never felt afraid and we took the subway many times during my week stay. With 19 people going, you may be the ones creating the fear.

They are playing Cleveland so a bigger than usual crowd should be on hand. The games will probably not sell out but for a better choice of tickets it might be a good idea to purchase tickets in advance. You can purchase tickets at www.1stoptickets.com/yankees

You won't have any trouble with subway or tickets. In fact, you can't get lost-but beware that you may have to get off your train and on another because some of the trains only run so far during rush hour. If you are going to an early evening game make sure you get on the one that goes all the way. But if it does happen, you won't miss the wave of people in NY Yankee shirts and jerseys who will be moving in mass. We had fun and the train was PACKED but we had 8 people and it was very difficult to stay together so it would be good to have some common meeting ground after you all exit the train. We regrouped at the main entrance to the Stadium.

I am not sure what train Jeanette is referring to but the D train will always go to 161st St. and beyond. The common meeting place could be a good idea - most people meet at The Bat. You can't miss it. It is huge bat found halfway around the stadium from the subway station. Also a good idea to give everyone their ticket. Going and returning the subway will be crowded. You will be going during rush hour. Subway cars at the front and back end of the train tend to be less crowded. Returning is even more crowded and the chance of people in the group becoming separated is a real possibility so be sure everyone knows how to return.
I just reread the note I posted with subway directions. They are wrong and I am surprised no one picked it up. You do take an A train at 42nd and 8th or a C at 50th and 8th but you have to change for a D express going to the Bronx at 59th Street.
There are better alternatives. Go to 7th Avenue and 53rd Street and take the B train (local) going to the Bronx. Change at 59th Street for the D train (express) going to the Bronx. The express only makes three stops going to the Bronx - 125th, 145th and 155th - next stop is 161st. To go express all the way with no changing walk to 42nd and 6th Avenue and take the D express at 42nd St. Just make sure going you get on the platform marked UPtown/Bronx. Returning just follow the crowd. I wouldn't change trains. I would take the D to 42nd street and from there walk back to to the hotel.

We live close enough now to Yankee Stadium that we can walk (did that last week to the Baltimore game).
The other posters are right about the D train. The A train you will have to get off at 145th St and go downstairs and take the D which heads over to the Bronx.
Also you can get tickets for games during the week at the "Clubhouses" whic are located in Midtown Manhattan. I got 2 tickets and great seats 2 rows back from the field.
I would suggest ordering them in advance for so many of you comming so you can sit close to each other and get tickets for a game during the week, those are typically not sold out.
Also you can arrange something special for your family during the game, there is a huge message board, probably costs a bit, but it might be fun.
The yankees website is of course www.yankees.com. Have fun and maybe see you at the stadium.

Thanks so much for all the responses, which have been very helpful. Having a common meeting place is a great idea and we may not have thought of that. Actually I am a Cubs fan, but will be cheering for Yankees! Who knows, maybe I will come back to Illinois with a Yankees shirt! We are celebrating my mother's 70th birthday, so thanks much for the fabulous idea with the message board. That will be just perfect. Thanks to everyone for their kind responses.
