I inherited a condo in Lake Tahoe when my parents died and enjoy going there, taking friends and donating it to local fundraisers. Because it's a condo, I don't have to worry about upkeep.

But I would never buy one - my whole idea of a vacation is having someone else clean, cook, do the laundry, etc. That's why I've never understood the RV thing - you are taking all your housework with you which is NOT a vacation in my book!

We thought about a buying a vacation home, but decided to use our retirement money (providing neither of us are seriouly ill), and spend winter months away.. Often times we view the rentals online and see really good monthly rates for beach, mountain and european villas, and apartments. Many even offer senior rates. This is will allow for more flexibility in our travels. I would love to spend a month or more in Europe, Myrtle Beach, Florida, etc, without having to worry about homeowner expenses. Just pack up and move on....

Once my current home is paid for, I definitely do not want to worry about another home.....

My wife & I bought a vacation home in the mountains of NC in 2001. We can can be door to door from our home in Atlanta in exactly 2hrs. We are secluded, up high on a mountain and love it. The short travel time means we can go 20-30 weekends a year. Just the serenity, solitude and scenery is worth it. The hustle and bustle of city life makes for a wonderful weekend getaway. We still travel 1-2 times a year. This year Europe & Charleston. It's funny, I have never kept a diary in my life but ever since we bought the place I have kept one. Seems like every time we go something happens/we do is really memorable. Well worth the investment IMHO. Gotta go; headed to the mountains!

We just bought 298 acres in Adirondacks. We got a charming farm house with it. We have miles of our own roads for hiking, snowshoeing and skiing.
You are welcome to visit us! We are 21 miles from Lake Placid

Dear 14VK8SHN.
Our place won't be ready for a while. How about the end of May. Let me know.
I love NYC too. And Lake Placid and Montreal and Paris and Madrid and many other places

If I every hit one of those $200 million lotteries, my wife and I are buying a small house on Kauai on the cliff overlooking Secret Beach.

IT also makes a nice jumping off point for visits to Australia and New Zealand
