Would like information on The sagamore Hotel...

We are planning our Christmas Holidays at the Sagamore Hotel. Hoping to see some snow and do some skiing at Gore mountain. I have seen mixed reviews of this hotel and am looking for others. We are staying in a lodge suite. Would also like less exspensive restaurant choices in the area....

I have never stayed at teh Sagamore, as we have a cabin in the Adirondacks, but I will suggest the following restaurants (none of which is real close, but look at a map):
The Merrill Magee House in Warrensburg, Davidson Brothers in Glens Falls (a microbrewery - great food), and if you HAPPEN to be in Speculator definitely go to Melody Lodge (it's WONDERFUL).

linco, we stayed at the Sagamore a few times, once in late September, the other times in November.
We stayed in a lodge room, with the fireplace and terrace overlooking the lake.
The rooms were very nice, the service at the hotel is very good. The clientele can be on the elderly side sometimes, but we enjoyed snuggling in by the fire and taking walks and enjoying the beauty of the area.
We had room service by the fire and went out to small places that I never remembered the names of.
There is an Italian place in Lake George, right across the street from the Lake that was good I am sure that is a lot of help LOL
Have a good time!

My husband & I stayed at the Sagamore last February. Another couple also joined us there. It is a truly beautiful hotel but I would not hurry back there. .

For me, the hotel was too glamorous for me to be comfortable. The clientel is older or very well off...plus there is a strict dress code which I did not enjoy. Ok, maybe its just me but I want to be comfortable after a long day of skiing...they enforce a "no jeans, no casual wear" dress code in the hotel.

We had booked the ski package but I felt that Gore Mountain was too long a drive (about 50 minutes) for it to be a real "ski and stay" package.

Finally, the town was dead. We did not find much open in the way of shops, restaurants or night life. That was a little disappointing.

We ended up having dinner at the Sagamore both nights and then amused ourselves with board games that the hotel keeps on hand.

I don't know where you are traveling from, but if you pass through Saratoga Springs there are a number of fabulous restaurants. We ate two week's ago at Caroline's Bistro and really enjoyed it.

The dress code is for the Hotel restaurants and that is "resort casual".
I guess they want to keep the tone set above jeans and tee shirts..which is all of Lake George.
It is an old and fine hotel, although not what I would call "glamorous"..more an aura of wealth and privelege with some old golfer thrown in LOL
We have never had a bad time there, have you looked at their web site?
I believe it is the Sagamore.com..

I agree about the "fancy" element. It just doesn't say "Adirondacks" to me, but some obviously like it. Other accomodation ideas for Gore: The Copperfield Inn in North Creek (very nice), Merrill Magee House in Warrensburg, Friends Lake Inn.

Our family stayed at the Sagamore last summer. After seeing the pictures of the beautiful old inn, I was surprised to be put in one of the lodges. Then, to make a bad thing worse, we were on the ground floor, with my husband and I facing the parking lot (king room) while the children (2 double beds) had a lovely view of the lake! I asked for another room, but was told they were booked solid. If noise bothers you, then make sure you're on the top floor of the lodge - otherwise you'll hear "stomp, stomp, stomp" day and night...Having said all that, Lake George is gorgeous. Have a great time.

This "resort" is most certainly not glamorous by any stretch of the imagination. Perhaps my opinion of this place is so strong as we stayed there a couple of years ago and found rooms (and the clientele) very old and musty. The food in the restaurant was passable at best. NOT worth the drive from NYC AT ALL!! We left two days early and headed up to Lake Placid where we stayed in the beautfiful Mirror Lake Inn which I highly recommend.
