Winter in Central New york - suggestions?
I will be spending a few days of December nearby Syracuse, NY. Would appreciate if anyone could provide recommendations as to ski resorts and other entertainment in the region. I am travelling with wife and 3 year old kid. Thanks a lot!!!

Hello, there are several ski resorts that are only an hour or so from here - Toggenburg, Song Mt., Labrador Mt. and Greek Peak (a little further out). Let us know the dates that you will be here - there is a lot going on in Syracuse during December and if you can tell us your specific dates it will save us from posting info about events that are happening when you're NOT here! If your family skates we have a new outdoor skating rink downtown (you can rent skates), also there are several family-oriented theater productions including A Christmas Carol & The Nutcracker, etc. Several near by historic homes have open houses during December (children are welcome), The Everson Museum hosts "A Festival of Trees" (also o.k. for kids and there is a small cafe for lunch/snacks etc.) and of course there is shopping. Syracuse has a lot to offer and we look forward to having you as a guest in our city. Let us know you specific dates and interests and we can make some suggestions for you and your family.

Thanks for the replies. Our plans are to be in the region from December 14 to 18. We were thinking about driving to Niagara Falls one day (how far is that, considering the road conditions?). We also noticed that there are some nice parks around the finger lakes, but not sure if they are open and worthwhile to be visited during winter. Advices are welcome!!!

You've already had some excellent suggestions. If snowboarding is part of the plan, I'm under the impression that you'll find the best facilities at Labrador. Toggenburg, Lab and Song all have their merits but if you've skiied in Vermon or out West, be prepared for relatively small hills - about 500 to 600 ft vertical drop. If you want something bigger with more challenge, try Greek Peak - it's near Virgil and Solon - not far from Rtye 81 about an hour south of Syracuse. I believe that most of the parks in question may be closed during the winter months but some have cross country skiing or horseback riding facilties and may be open. Highland Park, south of Syracuse in fabius, is a county park with great views and has horses, cross-country skiing and also sleigh rides when there's adequate snow. Letchworth park, south of Rte 90 near Geneseo (out near Rochester) is known as the "Grand Canyon of the East" and will have great views if it's open. Carousel Center mall in Syracuse has a good movie complex that is sure to have some kid oriented fare and they have a fantastic restored carousel ride that operates just off the food court.
