Winter Garden---NYC, Financial District

I keep hearing about this place. Is it a hotel or office building?

Thanks

The Winter Garden is an atrium in the World Financial Center. This complex houses offices (American Express is headquartered there for instance), but it has shops and restaraunts as well. Someone else will need to answer for sure, but I beleive there is also a hotel in it.

Laura, the Winter Garden is a large public space in the World Financial Center. The center is a huge atrium with a glass paned ceiling and lovely palm tree court. Right now the palms are decorated with thousands of tiny lights and Santa has a corner spot for visiting children. The Winter Garden also is home to a lot of nice shops and great restaurants, and just outside it is a marina where the water taxis and ferries come in. Wealthy people also park their yachts there in warm months. It is at the end of Battery Park promenade along the river. It's a very nice place. I work there and love it, and I'm very happy with the reconstruction. It was almost completely destroyed on 9/11 when the north tower fell onto it. It's a beautiful spot and very dear to many NYers hearts. Please come and visit it when you're in NY next, you'll love it.

The Winter Garden has always been one of my favorite places but I haven't been there since they reopened. We usually ride our bikes down there during the spring & summer. It's so beautiful. Although it's a horrible movie, "Bonfire of the Vanities" has a party scene set in the Winter Garden if you want to see it. And if you're visiting NYC, there are occasional noontime weekday concerts there, and some evening ones too.

I agree that the Winter Garden has been beautifully restored since 9/11. I had lunch in one of the restuarants there, Southwest New York, a couple of weeks ago and was amazed at how nice the entire atrium looks. Glad they brought the palm trees back.
