I am in Texas so we are not used to dressing for COLD weather.

Trying to decide what we should wear - especially for our legs.

We are snowmobiling but they provide some stuff.

But if we just buy some wind/rain pants...can we just wear fleece or sweats and then long underwear....to be in the elements looking at animals.

I saw this post, then went looking for my old post so I could link you to it. Glad I did because I saw that you'd already read it and had asked me a couple of questions. Sorry to have not answered but I was swamped with family from Christmas until the 7th and am just now getting back to checking Fodor's. But my only grandchild (just turned 1) was here and I only get to see him about every 6 months, so I gladly gave up Fodor's during his visit.

We're arriving in Bozeman late afternoon on February 2, overnighting there, then driving to Mammoth the next morning. We have night of the 3rd at Mammoth, then go to Old Faithful for the 4, 5, and 6. We go back to Mammoth for the 7, 8, and 9. Leave early morning on the 10th for Bozeman.

Right now I have our car through Hertz. Using my AAA discount they had the best price. Now that my house is mine again, I plan to check prices to see if something better has come along.

Regarding clothes. I found a good list and suggestions on the National Park Service's Yellowstone page. Also, as I'm sure you saw, there were some great suggestions from doohickey and others in my old post.

Since we'll be getting in to Bozeman around 4:30 we plan to take doo's suggestion and head to Murdoch's. I plan to bring everything I think I'll need with me, if possible. But I'm having a hard time finding some things locally. And I don't like buying certain items online. Although I did find a great pair of Black Diamond gloves online.

I spent a good part of an evening just before Christmas talking to a couple from here who have been out there 7 times to go snowmobiling. She told me to take 2 sets of "lightweight longjohns". Silk or synthetic (she said wool itches her to death) and plan to wear both on the days when it's really cold and we'll be out most of the day.

She also suggested getting those packets of "warmers" that you can put in your gloves, or boots and carrying extras.

My plan for the latter part of this week is to do an inventory of my gear to see what I'm lacking. With just 3 weeks to go, I'm running out of time to order anything online.

hi there....good to hear from you....we are doing the opposite of you. We are flying into Jackson on the 6th, going to Old Faithful on the 8th for two nights, then to Mammoth 2 nights and then back to old faithful.

Same issue here finding stuff. FYI, we did find the hand wamers on overstock.com for like 27 or 33 dollars for 40pair. we are going to order and have them shipped directly to our hotel in Jackson.

The pants are the biggest things right now and I don't like buying those on-line.

You can get 10 pair for less than $10. Forty pair of handwarmers seems pretty excessive for a four day trip.

My trip is for 2 people for 8 days. So I figure we need 16...at least for hands...and 16 maybe for feet..from what I have heard.

I will definatly check out the outlet tho for those and other items.

I am excited..but boy -- this is a LOT more expensive than what I thought.

Sorry, I didn't originally catch that you would be going back to Old Faithful.

You probably know this but there is a separate product for feet. Toe warmers are thinner with an adhesive so the warmer doesn't slide around. This probably isn't your plan, but using a hand warmer in your boot will not be comfortable. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious & mis-reading your post.

You are right about the expense of getting prepared, but I'm sure it will be worth it!
