Winter break in Ohio: Snow, Amish, hiking

We took a little winter break last weekend. We are having a miserable winter here in Ohio.

We met our friends at the Millersburg Hotel for lunch. Lots of Amish buggies out on the twisting, hilly roads today--and the high temp was 18 degrees. In the summer, we meet our Columbus friends here and hop on the towpath/buggy path for a bike ride. We also enjoy stopping along the way at the many furniture shops here in Holmes County--beautiful Amish made furniture.

We headed to Charm to check out the boot shop--great prices on Merrills.
Then we drove to Mohican Lodge, where we were spending the night. The lodge was refurbished about 4 years ago and is a very nice state park lodge. Comfortable rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, nice fireplace in the lobby/game area with a view of the lake. We booked the B&B package for $125/nt

After a short hike around the property, we took over a solarium at the end of our hallway and enjoyed a happy hour. The lodge has very few guests this weekend--it's a cold weekend.

Dinner and then cards in the lobby/game area.

Since fewer than 50 rooms are reserved, there is no buffet breakfast, but we order from the menu, linger over coffee, check out and then head down to the covered bridge area to hike. We hike around the river, a light snow begins to fall. It is quiet, peaceful, really beautiful.

Nice break. Fun to be with our friends. More snow predicted today.

Another Buckeye here. My mother used to live in Millersburg so am familiar with the area. As young marrieds we canoed by Mohigan Lodge often. As retired folks we are spending our first winter in florida! Thanks for posting your 'break' weekend. I enjoyed reading about our home area.

My DD and SIL have been living in Columbus Ohio since the beginning of June 2008. Everyone told them how cold it was going to be during winter but they never actually realised until they lived there. They are coming back to New Zealand for two months to get some summer, they are just so sick of the winter days and the snow.

Columbus doesn't get the snow that we get and it is always about 10 degrees warmer. My son lives there and is delighted with the much better/less snowy weather.

He does mention that they just can't clear the roads there and school will be cancelled when there is only a couple inches on the ground. Akron, where we live, does have great snow removal on the main roads.

We are going to Florida for a long weekend though. We leave tomorrow--as long as we can get to the airport--have to be there at 6am---and another storm is on its way tonight.
