Wildwood, NJ, worth the trip?

I have 7 of us going a beach trip this summer and I am considering Wildwood. Does anyone have any
information on it? We will be traveling 6 hours. Will it be worth it?

It is basically a typical East Coast beach town, a little more on the tacky side than most. You don't mention where you're from. If it's NJ you want, try Cape May which is unique and beautiful and essentially the same distance and climate. You can easily visit the Wildwood amusements for a day. Other possibilities (where condo, house rentals are possible) are Rehoboth Beach, DE or the Nags Head area (the Dunes make it special).

I second the vote for Cape May. It's just a few minutes outside of Wildwood. As a teen, my family went to Wildwood often. My husband (then boyfriend) and I planned a trip to Wildwood and happened to take a short drive to Cape May. Luckily, we were staying in a hotel that owned another property on Cape May, so we switched. If you're young and want the hectic beach scene, stay in Wildwood. If you're 25 or older, you may enjoy the victorian class and beauty of Cape May, which obviously I recommend instead.

IT WOULD BE EASIER TO ADVISE IF WE FULLY UNDERSTOOD YOUR PARTY AND WHY YOU SELECTED WILDWOOD? IF YOUR PARTY IS MADE UP PRIMARILY OF ADULTS CAPE MAY IS AN EXCELLENT RECOMMENDATION; CHARMING VICTORIAN HOMES, HISTORIC, A LOT OF BED & BREAKFAST ACCOMADATIONS EXCELLENT RESTAURANTS, ETC. SHORT RIDE TO WILDWOOD AREA FOR A DAY TRIP. ALTERNATIVES FOR FAMILY WITH CHILDREN WOULD BE OCEAN CITY, NJ. BOARDWALK, RIDES, ETC FOR KIDS, NICE BEACH AREA. SMALLER NEARBY BEACH COMMUNITIES ARE: SEA ISLE, AVALON, STONE HARBOR. ALL SMALLER IN SIZE WITH FEWER ACTIVITIES BUT A CLOSE RIDE TO CAPE MAY / WILDWOOD / OCEAN CITY. IF YOUR HEART IS SET ON WILDWOOD CONSIDER THE CREST AREA A LITTLE MORE ON THE QUITE SIDE. GOOD LUCK!

Unless you are 16 and your hormones are raging, wildwood is not the place to go. Wildwood is pretty tacky and it is not a wholesome atmosphere. I would agree with everyone else. Stay in cape May and travel to Wildwood for the amusements. If Cape May is too expensive, you could consider staying in Stone Harbor or Avalon which are small quiet towns north of Wildwood. There you will be centrally located at a nice family beach town and you can go down to Cape May for dinner and a show, to wildwood for the rides or to the Ocean City boardwalk for a nice boardwlk experience.

Hi Bobby, In deference to all your other responses, we have been going to Wildwood for 12 years, since the kids were babies. However, we do not stay i Wildwood, we stay in "family oriented" Wildwood Crest. There are a few particularly nice hotels there: Pan American and Port Royal. E-Mail me and I will fill you in much more. Also, it matters who is in your party. Much, much more to say. Carol

Guess I.m tacky cause I like the place. I agree it is your typical east coast beach town but there is lots to do. You dont say the age of the persons in your group but here is my advice. If your takin kids there is a ton to do; the beach is huge and the boardwalk nearly 3 miles long! If it s a younger crew it is quite a party town at night there is a section called holly beach two blocks from the boardwalk lined with bars. I do agree if ya want it a little tamer WW Crest is a good choicenad if you want a quiet relaxed trip go to Cape May. Any questions drop me a line

Wildwood and Wildwood Crest are the perfect places for a family vacation. I spent my entire childhood vacation here. You'll find many motels offering a wide range of ammenities. Try calling 1-800-WW-BY-SEA. There is, of course, the boardwark; water parks on the boardwark; many fine restaurants, many "budget" restaurants. Keep your eyes open for the 50's architecture. Try a day in Cape May. Pedestrian mall has many fine shops and eateries. Cape May is a victorian town.
ENJOY YOUR STAY.

Our family of 6 plan to visit Cape May area during the July 4th weekend. We have 2 young kids--age 2 and 5. I really love the charm of Cape May's B&Bs, however, they are quite expensive for a family of 6. Plus, we'd prefer to have a swimming pool in case the kids didn't like the ocean waves.

Can you suggest some other relaxing but fun area to stay that's about $100 per night that'll sleep 6?

My wife and I just got back from our second annual Wildwood vacation. Since we've gone in June (the season doesn't get too crazy til July-Aug.), it's been pretty quiet . . . it reminds me of the pre-casino Atlantic City of my youth . . . lots of amusements, tremenous poverty surrounding the attractions . . .

the beaches are about the biggest anywhere . . .

We might try Wildwood Crest next year. It has no boardwalk and is less commercial if you're interested in relative quiet. We had trouble finding a decent place to eat (unless you're into junk food) in Wildwood itself, but Wildwood Crest has -- I think it's called the Captain's Table, right off the beach -- good fare at reasonable prices.

I think you'll be able to find accommodations in the price range you cited almost anywhere in Wildwood.
