Oh no, not again! In the 19th Century Hawaiian royalty realized they needed to align with one of the "great powers".
Sugar plantation owners forged an alliance with the powerful men in the U.S. Hawaii was briefly part of Britain (that's why the Union Jack is in Hawaii's state flag). The U.S. forced Britain to withdraw and restored the monarchy. The factions in Hawaii favoring union with the U.S. finally gained sway and the U.S. stepped in to stabilize the unrest. In time Hawaii became a territory and then the people of Hawaii voted to become a state.
