why do you live where you do?
i thought it would be interesting to see the reasons why people have ended up where they are currently living. hometown? family nearby? job? climate? quality of life? current or former love interest? ???
just curious.

Born and raised in Houston. Moved to a tiny island in the Dutch West Indies 12 years ago due to DH's employment. Now I am employed here, as well, and we own property and have our Dutch citizenship. It's "home" now.
Of course, the peace and quiet, no crime, beautiful ocean, warm climate and quality of life are what keep us here.

Moved to southern CA for grad school, stayed for my job. Turned down repeated offers for a job in Manhattan. Quality of life is wonderful, so why change anything?
ahhnold: And I thought you lived in MA for the chowdah...!!
Just watch it-- hubris eventually leads to comeuppance. And who wants that?

while living in nyc, we bought a weekend home on md's eastern shore. we quickly fell in love with the slower pace, extremely friendly people at every turn, ease of living daily life, no crime and the beauty of the place. after 5 years, moved here full time and couldn't be happier.

I lived in the Bronx as a young child, then moved 1 hour north of the city, then after college the only job offer I got was in NYC - here I am, still, 14 years later. All my family except my brother has left the area.
I love it here because there are just endless fun things to do. My typical week includes a Yankee or Mets game, a dance lesson, a soccer game (playing not watching), watching some kind of performance, maybe attending a benefit or an opening at an art gallery, and dining out with friends several nights. And lots & lots of walking & exploring on weekends. Home is just a place for sleeping & showering, LOL.
I also love the diversity and openmindedness of this city. And that there are so many intelligent, intellectually stimulating and artistic people here.
Recently we put our condo on the market, not because we want to move but because our RE agent said she could get us big bucks for it. So that got us to thinking, "where else could we live?". After checking out a bunch of other cities, we found them all lacking in some way. Having to drive places is a big NO, so that rules out most US cities. Anyplace colder than NYC is unacceptable to my BF, as is anyplace w/o major league baseball. That doesn't leave much! So here we are to stay for awhile.

Montana. We live here because we're a couple of hours away from my husband's parents and my parents. Also, quality of life is incredible if you like outdoor activities (and we do!).
Of course, my salary is much lower here than if I would've taken a job in a city or different state. But cost of living is lower, too. My husband is able to stay home full-time with our daughter and we can live somewhat comfortably on my salary (or as comfortably as we can with law school and grad school student loans to repay).

Knoxville, TN - I was born and raised in Tennessee and have lived all over the state - Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis. My husband and I moved to Knoxville because we both went to college here, homes are affordable, it is a relatively safe city, many of our friends live here, and it is halfway between both of our families (mine in east TN, his in middle TN). I would never move outside the South, as I love the climate, the culture and the people. I would prefer to live somewhere like Charleston, SC near the beach, but it is probably not in the cards for us. We are both attorneys, licensed in TN and don't want to go through the hassle of becoming licensed (and possibly having to take another bar exam) in another state.

I live in Clay NY and really love it here. DH and I have a house on the Oneida River. I will always want a place on the water. The waterfront property is still affordable here so we'll probably stay. My mom and step kids are also a reason we stay. Plus DH and I have great jobs. Mine especially would be hard to give up at this point. There are only 2 other places I'd like to move to - CA and HI. Can't afford waterfront property in either of those places
But who knows we may get there someday.

Chicago born and raised- South side.
I live now in the Chicagoland area, but not in the city. Over the years I have had 3 homes in various areas and now live in Will County. I also have a home in Michigan on a 600 acre lake.
Family, people, roots and continuity with old friends are all reasons I'm here- with family being prime. Also secondarily work, and the attitude about work in my part of the Midwest.
It's has priceless rewards beyond the material.
Weather or ease of life is altogether secondary to me and mine. The only place I'm going to uproot to is driveable and it is NORTH, not South.

Michigander by birth, lived in NY State, and spent the rest of my years so far in New Jersey. Stayed because of jobs. Then the kids came... Now the youngest is off to college in 2 years and we're itching to move westward. Maybe Seattle area. NJ property taxes are obscene and I've just about had enough of them. The winters are cold and the summers hot and humid. So we'll see what happens and where we end up.
