I forwarded this thread to them about a year ago and never heard anything. Not even an acknowledgement of my comment.
I use my DVR to tape the Passport to Europe and any National Park shows. Those are always on during the day. The primetime stuff we still stay away from.

for several years, everyone told me about the travel channel, and I was so
JEALOUS, cuz my favorite thing in the world is travel, all my money, time, and resources go for my next international adventure! (read: fix) Sooooo then it happened..My cable network started including the Travel Channel! I was in heaven, couldn't wait to start watching shows about Paris, London, Rome, Prague
St. Petersburg, you get the picture. Then reality bites..POKER POKER POKER
what the ****! This is not travel! This is Vegas! I like Vegas, sort of, but not on my dreamed of travel channel! I hope that the programming dopes responsible for this read this thread..
GIVE US TRAVEL JUNKIES OUR TRAVEL NETWORK! There are PLENTY of shows, documentaries (if you could call them that) sitcoms, etc., all dedicated to the Vegas lifestyle (?) Can we please have rolling vistas and precious ancient sites? How 'bout shows to teach us how to make those wonderful crepes, gnocci, cornish pasties? I'M ALL IN!!!

The "travel channel" is pretty bad, I haven't watched it in ages.. but I have discovered History International.. they show things like Traveler's History and archeology shows.. it's brilliant! I was on that 24/7 for a recent trip to Egypt,, for the past month of October they highlighted 31 different countries.. oh who needs the old Travel Channel.

True all of that!!! With over 188 responses I wasn't sure if I should even bother writing this, but the more I read, the more I felt the need to voice my agreement! The travel oriented shows are few and very far between!! Where is the "travel" in the Travel Channel??!! I haven't read all the replys yet, but if anyone knows where I can see some educational, exciting and informative travel shows, let this girl know!!!
Sincerely disappointed!!!

Hey - is this becomming a cult thing?
Don't watch TV so, maybe I shouldn't be here?
I do like to travel to cultural destinations. I personally, have no interest in going to LV. I've heard its pretty amazing at first, then, 15 min. later, dissolves into cheezy and sleezy.
People sittin' around playing poker? Ya - well, that's kinda akin to a river-boat trip down the Yangtzee River in China but...
Wonder if Vegas bought The Travel Channel? Maybe its just one big infomercial, huh?
And Hawaii is purty to look at. If you're into die-hard sports and too much sun, its great. A "cultural" gettaway? Absolutely NOT! Very, very boring.
Geez - that's the dish The Travel Channel is coughing up these days: Hawaii and Las Vegas?

Wow - thank goodness I'm not the only one who feels this way! They made me mad a few weeks ago when they showed a program about the Grand Canyon. Well, they talked about the mule rides, white water rafting trips and Havasu Falls, yet made NO MENTION of that fact that these three activities are the most popular and usually require a year's advance reservation! They touched on Grand Canyon West a bit, which was cool, but they also talked about snakes as though you were likely to encounter them. I've lived in the Grand Canyon area for about twenty years and can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a snake, and none of them were poisonous! I was all, "great, scare people away from the place why dontcha?" Those of us who serve visitors to the area have to clear up with misperceptions and misinformation all the time, and this particular show, I felt, just added to the problem. Thank you PetHead, for clearly stating what needed to be said!

Hi! My personal beef with the Travel Channel is that during the actual shows (real, travel shows) which are shot on location...it is VERY obvious that the footage is shot by (horny) men...lots of shots of women in bikinis, butt shots, (plastic surgery-ied) breasts, etc. Well, I am in no way a prude, and can appreciate the human body, but let's spend some more time on the actual LOCATION, or at least show a guy's nice butt or muscular chest once in a while!! Ta! Ta!

There was a time where you could look at the listings and actually see shows about hot spots for traveling. Nowadays when you tune in you are either subject to a poker match with players I wouldn't know from Adam or shows about haunted spots to vacation. How about a nice show on Maui, Orlando or any city! I am glad I am not the only one.

Hee...this really is the Thread That Won't Die -- but I think that's because even with a good show like Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations, the channel still has vast room for improvement. I vote for TC going cold turkey off its unnecessary Vegas days/weeks/months and top ten shows.
Today's schedule features 10 -- TEN -- hours of poker. Ugh. I agree with a post waaaaay upthread calling it, along with golf, the Sport of the Dead. Ha! Excellent.
You know, I actually like Samantha Brown very much on Great Hotels. I still watch old episodes on occasion. Interestingly, I don't care for her Europe shows, I think mostly because I don't feel I learn anything more about the destinations than I know already.
Alas, it seems GlobeTrekker's return to the channel was short-lived: I haven't seen it on the schedule in several weeks. But I did have a beef about that anyway: they cut out the wonderful closing music/montage over the credits in order to shove in more commercials. That's why I actually prefer watching GT on one of my three local PBS stations here in Los Angeles -- commercial-free and shown in their original running time.
5Takes was okay, I thought. Some episodes better than others, and only that host, Brad, really of interest to me. (It didn't hurt that he was fairly hunky, too. Heh.)
Remember that show Travelers, which used to air on Discovery, I guess before there was even a Travel Channel? I taped many of the episodes just before it went off the air. I really loved that show.
For my trip to Istanbul next month, I'm already planning a little mini-marathon of travel programs I've taped about the city of the years from Travelers to the Globe Trekker City Guide, to Rick Steves.
