It's been awhile, but we liked Brenneke's near Poipu for it's beautiful beachside location and good fish meals. It's low-key, not expensive.

iceeu2, you've seen the loco moco thread here, right? It's a long one and lists a lot of different places on the island to try it. You can get loco moco just about anywhere but the key is whether it's the best one or not. Maybe you can kill 2 birds with one stone and have an upscale loco moco at the Pineapple Room.

Hawaii Kai is the original location of Roy's. It's on the East side of the island, on your way out to Hanauma Bay. the one at Ko Olina is on the West side of the island.

Mahalo for all of this wonderful eating advice! This talk of Scotty's Beachside BBQ is making my mouth water!

Bill, we are staying at kauaivilla.com for a few weeks... still checking into adding a week in Poipu... depends on what I can do w/ my miles.

I am bringing my mother for her birthday. We usually do a long weekend getaway somewhere more local, but I enticed her to somewhere more lush & lovely... er... rainy, nothing to do, etc.

She disliked Maui her only time to Hawaii because of how built up & busy it all was... she prefers quiet caribbean islands... I'm thinking she'll fall in love with the north shore of Kauai... no place like Hanalei!

makai1,
Sounds like a nice trip. I actually like traveling with my parents too. If you will be there on or after 7/26 we should GTG.

Back to food...Auntiem? How is Niede's these days? I don't see much written about them on this board. Do you ever eat there?

Thanks MelissaHI...hey, now that's a thought on the loco moco. And, if you could meet us for dim sum after/during the tour with PPC, that would be all the better...You are the one who has to work on Tuesdays.......we will be on vacation!!! I will do a search for the loco/moco thread. I seem to remember it, but at the time had no interest since we weren't headed that way for a while.
Oh, and you know what else I just found on Chai's website??? A coupon for for two entree's for the price of one for dinner on Sunday, Monday & Tuesday. That is awesome, I think, don't you? Oh, and you know what else I found..$3 martinis on weekdays at Morton's...along with comp beef tenderloin sandwiches....Ooh...that sounds good too..
We will be there in 69 more days!! Hot dang!

makai1...a gtg would have been lots of fun...we are on Oahu from May 14th thru May 19th..then off to Kauai until May 28th!
We are going to have the privilege of meeting another couple that got the same hotel we did thru priceline on Oahu(found them on biddingfortravel.com)...and then on Kauai, we are meeting up with Budman and the Mrs.
We live in North GA..where do you live makai1 and iamq?

Oh, fodors GTGs are big fun! Only the nicest people show up for those events. Just keep PakePorkChop from bringing up any political statements, and the evening will go smoothly.

Aloha all,

Would have loved a Hawaiian GTG... I'm 50 miles north of Chicago. There are whispers of a GTG in the windy city around the marathon in October... we'll see.

Have fun iceeu2 and Budman... maybe auntiemaria will join you!

To make a firm correction to prior remarks, it is Kalena that bristles whenever political discussion arises; I could care less because my commitment is to food, regardless of partisan origin. My evidence: I can produce a record of my food adventures for the past several years and it will show a distinctly Republican origin, in spite of my (erroneous) youthful Democratic leanings.

Whatever. To return to the original inquiry, if we are doing loco moco for the gtg, the wines would be Young Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, or Chianti.

What about cold beer, or tropical drinks or just plain old good fruit smoothies????

Ok, now another food question...how about Korean food? Recommendations there? The "real icee" (I only took his name so that's what makes me icee2) may want to go. Who knows?

Also, which shrimp truck? Does it matter?

And, I'm all for dismissing any discussion of politics!

iceeu2 - I put a little blurb on the Other Topics board under Wine-O's only. It was great.

I don't know where you are staying your last night. We will be staying on the West Coast for the first 3 nights then the East coast the other 4. Why don't you pick a place.

Bman..we will be on the east coast the last night..same time you will be on the west coast...if Kal's watering hole is back open by then he tells me you can get a heavy dose of alchihawl there! Hey....we may just meet in the middle. Will send contact info closer to the date. We may have found a super duper place by the time we leave. Good grief, I don't know if I can wait another 68 more days or not!!

Yes, PPC, I knew that, but if I recall you had thrown out the political comment at the last GTG that sparked...er, spirited debate.

The area near Ala Moana Center called Keeaumoku has a number of authentic Korean restaurants. I think they're listed on a thread that northshore started. Like Sorabol. mm mm.

As far as dim sum - the carts will (should) stop by your table without you having to do much to call them over. Main problem (if it's crowded) is getting what you want before the other tables grab it first.

There are basically 2 different carts - one for steamed stuff, the other for the fried stuff. You'll be able to look and point at what you want. If you wanted a noodle dish, you'll have to order that separately, as they are not on the cart.

If you find the ladies that push the cart a little . . . brusque . . . don't worry. That's typically how they are and treat everyone that way - even those that can order in Chinese.
