The above suggestions are good, but let me add a few more. The Mansfield on 44th between 5th and 6th is in the 195-200 price range. The location is great. The rooms are very small but they are done very tastfully. The public areas are very attractive-good artwork and furniture-continental breakfast and a dessert buffet at night are included. The Roger Smith on Lexington is a little less "chic" but the rooms are larger- it also has a good location and continental breakfast. The Helmsley Middletown on 49th is reasonably priced and while it has no lobby the rooms are pleasant and well equipped. Have a nice trip

The Doral Tuscany, in Murray Hill neighborhood, on 39th or 38th, I believe -- is a small-ish hotel, small lobby, personal service, large rooms (with separate dressing room and bar/fridge areas). We've stayed there on a good w/e rate (but a couple years ago); don't know what the rate would be w/o discounts. But it's the first place I'll check out on our next trip to NYC. Also check the discount hotel brokers...we've done that in the past, and it pays for good rates. *That's how we found the D. Tuscany the first time (also, they have a webpage...)

I'ved lived in NYC for ten years. If you are interested in being in a residential neighborhood with tons of restaurants, you might want to check out the Franklin Hotel on E87th Street and I believe they also have another hotel on Madison Avenue. It is close to the subway and there are always plenty of taxis around. The Franklin hotel's phone number is 212-369-1000. I also highly recommend the Fitzpatrick Hotel - it's centrally located and walking distance to Bloomingdales.

The Barbizon (63rd and Lex)is great. Very beautiful, and has a super fitness club!
unfortunately, rooms are quite small.
The Delmonico (59st and Park) is also good. Rooms (all suites) are much larger and the price is quite the same...I do prefer the other neighbourhood, though.
