Which Priceline zones in whole LA basin have best value?

I know this sounds kind of stupid and ridiculous, but I'm flying into LAX this weekend, for no particular reason or purpose, and needs hotel for Saturday night.

I love driving, will have rental car to drive all over the place, so I can literally stay overnight ANYWHERE in the LA basin. [No San Diego or Las Vegas though.]

I am highly experienced in bidding on Priceline to get hotel rooms, so I'm planning to do the same. And I use and post on Biddingfortravel often. But, my question is, which areas in general have the best deals for upscale hotels on PL? I'm willing to spend up to $100 to get something like a Westin, Marriott, or Hyatt, which I notice is often rated as only 3*s in California (but usually 4* elsewhere).

Sorry for asking such a broad question, but I hope to get some ideas, ANY ideas, from those who use PL for Southern California often.

I haven't really toured the LA area for many years, so any area will be fine and fun for me.

Just an educated guess, here. On weekends, I would imagine that you would find the best value for the $ at the downtown business hotels or LAX area hotels.

Good Luck and let us know what you get.

Ah... I decided to try some 4* in the OC. Bid Newport/Huntington Beach up to $90 but didn't get it. So, switched to Costa Mesa/Irvine and got the Westin South Coast Plaza for $65+tax = $80. Reviews look okay, and it's not that far from the beaches.

Also used Priceline to get my rental car. $15/day x 2 + tax = $43 total, Mid-size from Hertz.

That's a nice hotel .... next to South Coast Plaza ... a HUGE shopping mall. Since you'll have a car .... drive down Jamboree Road towards the coast til you can't go any farther ... you'll be on Balboa Island. Great place to walk around, shop and eat. Or take PCH down through Corona del Mar and into Laguna.

Have fun!

Looks like that's 50% off the rate from Westin. Good deal!

Make sure you head down to Newport Beach - it's real nice there.

Another vote for Laguna. Hopefully, our thick June gloom will lift for you.

Enjoy!

I have stayed at the Westin a few times - it is RIGHT next to the 405 freeway - Not sure who you are traveling with - but the resturant Scotts Seafood is good - and right next door. Go down to Newport or Laguna...
Enjoy

Thanks to all who've replied. Well, it's a solo trip, but will meet up with at least one highschool friend.

I'm still trying to figure out a purpose/theme for this trip. Food? Photography? Driving? I'll probably just go with instinct.

I just realize the Westin is adjacent to the Orange County Performance Arts Center, and I remember reading an article on Wall Street Journal about the new Segestrom Hall there, which opened just last fall.

I found that the Pacific Symphony is playing that night, so I booked myself a ticket.

Last minute trips are fun!

Came back from the LA area this morning, and want to say the Westin South Coast Plaza is really really excellent. Service is typical 4* standard. There's a nice outdoor heated pool which is large enough for some lapping.

I ate at the restaurant Pinot Provence twice - dinner and breakfast. Very good food, and beautiful dining room. Service at dinner was superb, breakfast so so.

The location can't be better. I walked 3 minutes over to the OCPAC for the Pacific Symphony. I can see planes landing and taking off from SNA (but not hearing them). Easy access to the 405, 73 and 55 freeways. Newport Beach is about 10 minutes away.

And there are extra activities too. Sunday morning, in the park/plaza immediately in front of the hotel was the OC Cobra Owner's Club "Concours de Nice". There were about 60-70 Cobras, Shelbys, Mustangs, and a couple of T-Birds on display.

For what I paid for the hotel ($80, including tax for room; self-park $16 with in-and-out), I couldn't be happier.

rkkwan.. glad you had a nice stay... thought of you over the weekend and wished I was closer! (Four hours north in Pismo Beach) I enjoyed your pics from the Houston get together and have read your Continental advice on the flight board fairly often! Next time give a bit more notice!

Just want to say I've my OC pictures (including night time views of the Orange County Performance Arts Center that's next to the Westin and a Cobra/Shelby owner's meet in front of the hotel. Plus other pictures like Dana Point, Balboa Peninsula, Nixon Library, etc:

Nice pictures! I was just in LA in early May for a GTG, but didn't get down to Orange County. Next trip, I'm going to check out the Nixon site. Looks interesting! Thanks for sharing.

Didn't realize it was Cesar Pelli who designed the Performance Art Center. He also designed the DCA terminal.
