I like Southern Living. I also get a lot of my recipes off the internet. Here's a good example.

Southern Living has so many recipes that remind me of my Grandmothers cooking in NC!
I find myself gravitating to the most fattening recipes lol.
Epicurious . com has been my new source, since I packed away all my cookbooks for this first year in Portland..

I like Saveur best...
I also subscribe to Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Cooking Light and Fine Cooking.
I rarely use recipes, rather I get ideas from these magazines. I also like reading about food.
So, I tend to like the history aspect of Saveur.
For the price of ONE subscription you can get 'em ALL if you buy on eBay.
I get almost all my subscriptions on eBay and pay just a small fraction of the regular sunscription costs.

Great thread--never heard of Saveur so I will check it out! Sounds interesting.

Txtravelpro, how do you manage to read all those mags??And, since I have such difficulty parting with them (one never knows when you just might need THAT particular recipe, or travel article)-where do you keep all those magazines!!
I find myself on line at Epicurious.com often also, since I sometimes "misplace" one of our favorites.

I loved Gourmet into the mid 1990's, at which time the magazine's format changed to shorter articles by less-good writers. At that point I dropped my subscription.
Now I get Bon Appétit, Saveur, and Cook's Illustrated, and of those the latter is, I think, the best for just plain cooking advice.

Cooking Light
Many of the recipes (and wine pairings)in these magazines are created by top chefs in restaurants that many people travel the country (or world) to experience. IMO, it is relevant to travel. Many foods are regional; many of the ingredients are regional as well.

Thanks everyone! Your advice is much appreciated. I'm going to check out Cook's Illustrated since I've never heard of it and compare it to the others.
Sorry to offend anyone, I just figured (correctly it seems!) that people interested in travel also take an interest in good food.

Right now Gourmet and Bon Appetit are having a sale of $1.00 an issue... I have both now and definetely have over 20 years preferred and still do Bon Appetit.. Yet, I just accidently received a Chow magazine and subscribed..it's wonderful.. There are recipies I can hardly wait to make. So many of my old recipes come from Bon Appetit.. it gave me years ago a reputation as a "gourmet cook"..lol. Gourmet this Thanksgiving had a new recipe for roasting a turkey...after almost 50 years of roasting turkeys I tried it.. it worked.. Go for the years subscription to both..$1.00 an issue.. good deal.. and then you can decide.

Cooking Light is good, but it does really have a lot of other "stuff" in it, which often annoys me, since it's touted as a food magazine.
I really like Eating Well, and haven't seen that one mentioned by anyone.

i love cooks illustrated. have a couple of their cookbooks too. the best recipe is excellent.
bon appetit is my second favorite. just about all of my thanksgiving dishes comes from their november issues over the years.
i found cooking light to have too many ingredients that were processed or premade which generally translates to more chemicals and less healthy living.
i am finishing out a year's subscription of gourmet and i won't renew. too few recipes that i wanted to make.

FYI:
Epicurious.com is the online home of bon appetit and gourmet magazines. They have many good recipes that I like to print out.
I have gotten away from cooking magazines, and instead prefer to get my recipes from epicurious.com, allrecipes.com (my fave b/c it has recipe ratings that I've found to be accurate), and foodtv.com (the food network's website).
What I do is have a manilla folder that I keep the recipe pages in. I usually rate the recipes myself after cooking a recipe.

I am not kidding when I say that eBay is THE PLACE to get magazines.
I get more than 20 magazines a month. You know what I do with them?
I give the girl magazines to flight attendants and all my husband's go to his office.
If we get behind in our reading it just piles up.
I can wait to look up Chow.
My 3 fav NON-cooking mags?
1. The Week... 5 years (250 issues) on eBay for 10.00
2. Radar... which I just discovered and have not subscribed to yet
3. Mental Floss, just awesome. Love it!

November's issue of Cooking Light has a section called "Culinary Postcard" which highlighted recipes from a variety of restaurants in Chicago. The Frango mint cheesecake sounds good
It also has a section called "Enlightened Traveler" - and again highlights hidden treasures and restaurants. I never considered staying in Costa Rica let alone in a rain forest.
Evidently the culinary and tourism industry see a natural connection between travel and food.

Anyone know anything about Food & Wine?
Just received an offer in the mail for a year's subscription for $12. Sounds tempting, but I know nothing about it. Also not sure why I received the offer since I don't subscribe to any other food magazines.
Any thoughts? (Although for $1/issue, what could be bad???)
